    I think it would depend on the company for one thing and another, are you showing a willingness to get the license or are you slacking off? I was working for a local company and eager to learn everything. I failed the test and instead of at least letting me jump into a non use truck and putter around the yard, they fired me. So I enrolled in school and got my cdl that way.

    Harvey, I have a question for you or some other experienced driver on here. I am now having trouble finding work. I know I know a truck driver can always find work. well most of the bigger companies want some experience so i went to some places that hire grads. USA truck won't hire me because I had a speeding ticket for over 15 over two years ago. Werner kicked my app out because I have a non violent felony (credit card) from 2003 on my record. Swift hasn't sent me anything back yet other than a confirmation email. USXPRESS sent me a pre app, but with me being currently unemployed, I can't afford to go to their orientation (if i am hired) Any suggestions guys? I have no problem calling and calling over and over to make progress. I know another guy that went to work for Asplundh but for one, they started him out with his class a at only 9.50 an hour and a guy that they had take him to a worksite made him bypass the weigh station at the POE coming into NM from TX. The bad thing is they said they would pay the ticket (DOT caught him) but haven't done it yet, so that makes me leery working for someone like that especially since when I was working for Terra they promised to do the same thing for a guy and they didn't and he went to jail. that and those tickets go on YOUR record not the companies.

    I would seriously look at getting that felony expunged.

    If you live near any LTL terminals, start applying...This is hiring season...March-June is generally when they start staffing drivers. Get your doubles/triples and hazmat. That nonviolent felony shouldnt be a problem for your hazmat, but it might take longer for your background check to come back.

    I may be a little late to this post, but I just registered here yesterday.

    I am a new driver(A year and 3 months), and have been local all but 3 weeks of that time. I was OTR with BTC out of Memphis, TN for those 3 weeks. I decided OTR wasn't for me, and wasn't a good thing for my kids. So I went to every local job I could think of, and filled out an application. After I filled out said application, I was @ there yards EVERY morning afterwards, @ 6 A.M. opening the door for them. Needless to say, 3 days later I had a local job hauling scrap in a Tractor/Trailer, 38' dump trailer.

    If your not scared of stupid hours, starting really early, and little pay, then find a scrap hauling company near you. They are ALWAYS hiring, and they take students right out of school(because crappy pay). I work 10-14 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week, and barely bring home $500. But I am getting experience, and great experience at that. If you can back a 38' trailer, in a muddy scrap yard, made for 4 wheelers, you will do alright on the road lol.

    I know I make it sounds like a crappy job, but we have to get experience somehow. Trust me, SEVERAL times I have threatened myself to go back to the Iron Workers Union, but I keep kicking along in hopes of a GOOD local job I can plan to retire from.

    If anyone is from Ohio, in the Youngstown/Canton/Pittsburgh area, here are a few to check out;
    R&J Trucking (Boardman, OH)
    Three S Express(Boardman, OH)(Where I have worked for over a year now)
    Sebastiani(Somewhere, OH)
    Arrowhead(Cortland, OH)
    Paul Adelman(Randolph, OH)
    John Brown(Portersville, PA)
    McClymonds(Butler,PA?)

    There are a bunch out there. Some of them are actually grain/lime haulers with aluminum trailers, but it's the same principal. Good luck. Just don't be scared to work, or put in crappy hours. Remember, you are working TOWARDS getting that good job. Atleast that is what I keep telling myself.

    Great thread, I'm going to be trying hard to find that ever elusive "willing to train, little to no experience required" local job.

    got started at a local place last week. Hauling mud for local oil rigs. And they are going to help me get my Haz Mats and pay for them. It is a bit dirty of a job, but hey I don't mind getting dirty for a paycheck and the company is real big on running legal. First time I got drive an 18 speed Kenworth. So used to driving those ten speeds but after I figured it out, it is almost like a bike.

    I have looked high and low in my area for local or regional gigs but haven't found anything. As of now it looks like I'll ##### myself out to a big starter company and pay my dues that way. I thought I would be able to find something in the Charlotte area, but I guess not.
