Why go off duty? Don't think DOT is gonna start hunting people down when they hit a restroom or get some food to go and they're logged in the sleeper. Kind of seems tedious to get letters of permission for common sense needs.
8 day 70 hour rule?

Great thread! I am just getting ready to go to school and haven't thought that much about this topic at this point. I kinda passed over it and thought it was pretty simple but I can see that it can be very subjective.

I have logged 13.25 hours on the drive line in a 24 hour period on Elogs, no violations.
Started my clock 2345 for 15 minute pretrip and drove 5 hours. Pulled over for 2 hours. Drove another 5.25 hours, pulled over for 8 hours sleeper. Got up and drove another 3 hours before midnight again. Easy money, 755 miles logged. Went from Sacramento CA to Newark NJ in 4 days.
70 divided by 8 equals 8.75 hours a day on average. Works out to about 400 miles per day, times 7 days is 2800 miles in a week. There's no need to drive around with your hair on fire and take resets to achieve the same goal. If you turn in a 12 hour one day, turn in a 6 hour day the next day or so to bring you average down. If you turn in a 2 hour or 4 hour day, shave some days down to 6 or 7 to pad that short day coming up like transampete said.
To me resets are for hometime or dead freight areas. -
it's 70 hyours in 8 days. means hours don't drop till the ninth day. -
