Hey guys I have a couple questions.
My husband and I are considering becoming team truck drivers. He just got out of the Army in January.
We were told that Swift is offering a free scholarship for Veteran's to attend their CDL training course (hotel, class, etc covered). I was told by a Swift recruiter that since we are interested in being a team, all of my training and hotel stay would be free as well. All of that sounds nice but we were a little discouraged by the $.25 a mile deal, also we've been hearing some "bad things" about Swift so I just wanted to put more research into this before we make a choice, as we would be obligated to work for this company for 1 year.
Are there any other companies offering something similar to this, a Veteran Scholarship? He doesn't want to use his GI Bill for this as he doesn't plan on making it a career. We just want to do this for 1-5 years.
Is $.25 the norm for new people, or are there companies offering more to their students? Is Swift a good company to learn with and start with? The "bad things" that I've heard haven't bothered me too much, I just want to make an informed decision, I honestly don't know too many other trucking companies out there, but I'm sure you guys do.
Thanks!

Is that team/miles or solo/miles?
-
Rollin2003, I believe it's solo miles, he quoted us $.25 before we mentioned becoming a team. He said all new drivers earn at $.25 per mile, but you'll get pay increases in the future.
Does anyone know what the pay would be for a new team at Swift?
Maybe I need to call that guy back and ask how the pay is split for a team...if it's $.25 per mile for whatever miles that person drives or if the $.25 is split for 2. I really don't know how this works, completely new to this whole idea of trucking.Last edited: Sep 28, 2012

This links to the Swift pay scale. http://swift.drivers-central.com/swift-transportation/driver-pay.cfm
Team pay is split between the two drivers. It doesn't matter how many miles an individual drives, it how many miles the truck is driven. If one driver has 2000 miles in a week, and the other driver has 3000, each will get a check for half of the 5000. For a new team the rate is 32 cpm starting.
5000 miles @ 32 cpm = $1600,
each driver gets $800.mryhrndz Thanks this. -
Check the details of the "free" scholarship . It make require a year of indentured servitude . If for any reason you don't complete the year find out what you'd owe them . yup , here it is.
http://swifttrans.com/about/details/swift-veterans-scholarship-program There is a very high percentage of students that fail to meet this obligation . Get a couple of tickets , violate some petty company rule , or give them any other excuse and you're gone . Then you can expect to be billed for the school and you won't get a certificate of completing training . -
Yes, make sure you read the fine print before you sign.

Look at schneiders website. They have a similar program going on

The only difference between veterans and other student programs is the carriers get a government incentive to hire unemployed vets . The vets waste their GI benefits to get low training pay and substandard wages when they go team or solo . If the vets fail to meet the employment obligation see how much the carrier respects their military service . They'll be billed and given a negative DAC like everybody else .
Vets should avoid OTR training companies . -
The Government's "Vow to Hire Heroes" Act of September 2011, gives companies a tax credit for hiring recent veterans of about $5000.00 per hire, so Swift is making some money off of hiring you. It is very possible that all these companies have the same information, so I'd be a bit more picky if I were you. several trucking company websites I've seen in the past few months have mentioned a special veterans program-- I am sure you need to just look into this further.
