I have a question for myself: I havent worked in 2 almost three years since graduating from tds, and all these employers ask if I had work history for the past 2 yes, I tell them i've worked off and on with a temp service, but not the whole two years, just off and on.. I wonder how i can get past my unfortunate unemployment dry spell? If i havent worked in 2 years, and they want at least 2 or 3 years of work history.. i mean the whole point of getting into a new industry is because you are unemployed from your former one..

ok im done with my soapbox. but im curious.

Try this; use the temp service to fill in full unemployment gap. In other words, you worked for the temp. service, even though they didn't call you much.

Now, use online applications to apply for trucking jobs.

Google : truck driving jobs (fill out one application per website)
    Also online :

I recently have been dealing this this issue, so can tell you what I found out, and suggestion what you should do at this point. It isn't a matter of just verifyingwhether you worked or not during the past 3 years. The insurance companies are telling thetrucking carrier how much work history is acceptable. So I called a couple companies talked to the trucking recruiters, was told need at least 12 months steady work within the recent three years, another said I should get a job for a minimum of 3 months keep working there while applying for the trucking company, and then the recruiter will need to be able to call the company I'm working for to verify employment.

That's what I was told, don't know if they are being straight-up or what. Besides, wouldn't it look funny for the company I'm working with to get a phone call asking about my work history there after only 3 months? Like they would probably think about firing me if it looks like I'm just trying to use them as a stepping stone to getting a different job.

But basically what I'm suggesting to you is you have to jump through the hoops of what the trucking company requires of you. And you must be honest with them about your situation. Don't try to lie or by-pass the system and requirements. Trust is a big factor in this business because of the value of the truck and cargo they assign to you. By the way you will come across the same advice if you read enough of the other threads already on this forum.

I thought it would be easy to get a jobin trucking, even with no driving experience, because I read aboutthe driver shortages. Come to find out it might take some more timeto meet their requirements. So I'm telling you if you want to becomea driver, going to have to be patient and basically jump through thehoops they ask of you.

Still, the best suggestion is for you to call some of thetrucking companies you might want to work for, ask for recruiting, and talk to them about your situation. Be honest. Most of all BE SURE TO ASK DIRECTLY what you need to do from this point forward to meet their work history requiremen tso they will be able to qualify you -how many months of work is enough for them? Be sure you get that infofrom them so you know how to proceed.

Good luck (to both of us)!

ok, so that means i need to get probably 6 to 12 months of work history before i go to my first company.. ill have to go into the workforce at like a labor ready, or some type of job where you work the same day.. just to get employment going

Correct, yes that's what you should do. The next advice is you should have low expectations about which company to go with. You're asking all the same questions that I did about what is the best company to go with, etc. But in reality, the first year of driving experience is gonna be rough, especially if you're going to do Over the Road (which sounds like you are). True some companies probably suck less than others, but bottom line it boils down to you getting started with a year of safe driving. So we can hope to get lucky with a great starter company, but where I'm sitting now realized that if my only choice are among the "worst of the worst" companies would I still go for it? For me, the answer is yes....just to put the time in. You have to answer that question for yourself. Just saying if you lower your expectation about getting in with the best company, it will probably increase your chances of getting hired on at a company willing to give you a start....that comment not everyone will agree with, but then again not everyone has the same work history, criminal background stuff, whatever your situation is everyone is different. Still, first have to get the minimum amount non-driving work history taken care of. Hope it makes sense. After you get a year of driving experience then you should have more choices available to you.

You can say I was in the same boat as you and so far have two pre-hires. I have very bad work history or to be blunt 10 months of work history from different jobs all working for a month here and two months there with a good chuck of the 2.2 years remaining being unemployed. I even have an accident on record that was not considered my fault but still looks bad. Out of all the companies I applied too that offer CDL training, FFE and CRST called me offering me employment. I was going to look for a job to strengthen my employment history but since some companies were willing to give me a shot I plan to go for it. I still have to hope the background checks go through without problem since they still have to get in touch with those few companies I worked for before I am hired on.

You should apply for local jobs with temp agency's or even to basic places like McDonald's and at the same time send in applications to a bunch of companies and call the recruiters as well too see what they have to offer.

Since you have such a rough work history you may have to take what you can get for now even if it requires some re-training or refresher. Try these online applications and just see what happens:

Sometimes in life we don't like the hand we are dealt, but are big enough to deal with it whatever it takes.

Look locally, maybe some kind of lumber yard or something needs a driver. Might not be the best of pay, but I bet you could be more likely to find someone to take a chance on you!
