That is hilarious!!! Never thought anybody would actually do that, so that's a first!!!!
I've taken peoples empty trailers before, they've had seals, padlocks, etc... Only one occasion I had to give the trailer back, and I *****ed to the person's FM probably for 20 minutes. Apparently the trailer was only supposed to be used for a certain beer dedicated account even though the trailer wasn't that clean? Whatever...
My routine check at the yard looking for an empty was... Knock on side of trailer, if it sounds empty but there is a seal on it I write the number down and at the end of my check give the list to my FM to check which are actually empty. Sometimes (very rarely) my FM would give me an entire list of empty trailers that were supposed to be at the yard.TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
if i want an empty trailer from the yard. i just gotta look.
have to be totally blind to not see an empty.

I passed a USA tturck in the scales the other night in Tennessee (got the bypass lane) the truck was scaled at 81360... ticket! My trainer said he coulda went around them scales.
-
Yeah some brainiacke pop the seal on load of beer! Said trailer sounded empty, all except the 2 pallets little over knee high! Of couse refused!
-
Sucks to be that guy, but if you don't know the area or didn't look up on the map, you won't know how to go around the scales. Also, some routes that go around a scale (i.e. I80 sticker 56) there are sometimes bears that either sit at the exit or patrol US322/Rt208.
-
It is not too good of an idea to be slipping around the back side of a scale unless you know exactly what is back there, and how to get around them. Many back roads are low weight, and the bears love to bust you trying to avoid the coops.

Are you serious , it just seems to stupid , there is actually someone that did that ? Wow I needed that , a good laugh is a good thing sucks to be him !!

Large company I drove for this was a standard trick. When a driver found an empty that was in good shape, he or she would put a seal or a padlock on it to keep it. Also if empties were in tight demand they would do this to keep it for themselves as the company would not dispatch you without an empty. Many times I called my dispatcher and asked about a trailer. If it wasn't shown loaded I'd break the seal. It was then on the company if they made a mistake. I cut off a few padlocks also. My job is to move freight and if I had a load to go get I'd take the empty trailer. If the other person wanted it that badly they wouldn't have sealed it and gone home for the weekend.

Got a good laugh out of that. Definitely a worthy contender to be the "Doofus of the Year".
