Just got my CDL license a few minutes ago and I'm ready to start earing a living!! Here is my question: does anyone on this board know of a trucking company here in Houston, TX that will hire an inexperienced driver??? I used to drive a 22' stake bed truck for 17 years driving around 200-250 miles per day making deliveries. After being laid off 30 days ago I decided to drive 18-wheelers. I've already gone to truck driving school and my wife is behind me 150% and we know that I will be gone away from home more than usual but we are both okay with it. Medical/dental insurance is not an issue. Any suggestions as to what companies are good for new drivers with no OTR experience??? Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

your going to be hard lucked for anyone as they usually want people with some sort of experience and knows how to operate the transmission. you'll get a test drive starting out with your license.

your best bet woulda been to go to one of the newbie schools.

Hey. Congrats! - I've found this board to be absolutely full of information that should be able to help you find employment, and there's always Craigslist.

    -Cheers.

If you graduated from an accredited truck driving school you should have no problem getting on with a starter company, as long as you have a clean driving record and a clean personal record. But you need to do it quick! Most want you to start within 60 or 90 days.

If you do the leg work you can find something better than a starter company! A local gig home nightly is sweet. Or just home weekly...

Do a search for local companies and visit them in person dressed well. Food delivery pays well but you often have to unload yourself. Which is like a paid exercise program!

Welcome to our world thomas118! With 17 years of driving a stake truck driving I would try some of the local companies to see if they may be willing to take a chance with you. One thing that may help you would be a letter of reference from your former employer stating your previous experience and miles driven, perhaps that along with a well written resume may get you a foot in the door. Otherwise it will most likely be with a starter company for 6 months to a year. Keep us posted on how things work out for you.

Try Careerbuilder.com (will show every driving job available in Houston)

Also : CLICK HERE for a list of trucking companies that hire new drivers

As Pmracing posted, food delivery pays very good, but can ruin your back unloading even with proper lifting techniques.

Schneider & driveffe.com both train tanker for Texas oil field work.

Most companies have online applications. But, as Pmracing posted, for food service applications, go in person & well dressed.

I often start my day at 5 am, and I see the food delivery at a local corporation already unloading! EARLY EARLY hours!

I know, I did that and my day on average started between 1-3 am then if you're 30 seconds late, they complain, "where you been?" or "I already called your company to see what the holdup is." But, it's OK for them to delay you while they piddle around & make you late for the next stop. Also have to watch them constantly for hiding stuff and then saying you shorted them; makes their inventory/profit look good. The money is good, but not worth the stress of dealing with those people.

I'd take a look at small, local companies. The mega-carriers aren't likely to consider driving a stake-truck "driving experience", when, in all honesty, it will give you some advantage over true newbies who have never driven anything larger than an F150. If you've already had to work with an unsynchronized manual transmission you are well, well ahead of the curve over many new trainees.
