i am currently serving in the military due to get out in 2014. my father has been trucking for 23 yrs. i have went on the road with him sice i was 3. i have been looking at several companies and narrowed it down to swift and prime and cr england. i will be getting my cdl before i got out of the military. any ideas on who to go with for a new driver? if you hve your cdl already, whats the hiring process like? do you still do a road test for them? i sawthe prime terminal, do they assign you a truck or have you go pick one? just looking for some input for the truckers out there.

Lots of good companies out there. Keep looking before you make a decision. Don't get involved in a lease program; wait for a couple of years before making a decision. Do you live in the hiring area for the companies you're interested in? Check websites for hiring area. You may still have to attend school for some companies, even though you have a CDL if you have no military experience.

Crete Carriers has 3 divisions - flatbed/reefer/dry van - they recognize and credit military driving.
System Transport runs lower 48 & Alaska

Having a CDL, all depends on the company - Orientation on company policies, procedures, logs. hazmat etc. may have you go with a trainer for 1 to 6 weeks or so, road test is done before final decision is made to hire after training is complete and a go if training is a requirement. Once hired a truck is assigned, picking one out yourself from a line up ... yes, possible but again depends on company. I will not give out advice which company to go with

You could'nt have picked a more better forume then this one for advice but im curious with all the exp your dad has why have'nt you asked him about some good companies.I will say this though, cross crengland off your list, they are the worst of the worst according to most that have drove for them. They'll try their best and most the time they succeed into talking the new drivers into leasing. If you choose not to then you get sent home and wait weeks to months for a company trk as to why most lease.Keep in mind if you go to a trucking company to get your cdl you have to sign a yr contract and I really don't think it would be a wise decision going to crengland.

last year. flat paid better then reefer. this year reefer pays better. and all you gotta do is drive.

with flat you get exercise. but make less money. go figure.
