I live in rhode island and I've been looking for a companies that own their own schools. I'm broke and can't afford any 3rd party schools like nettts. Any suggestions? I don't mind committing for a year or two as long as I have a job.

As long as you are willing to commit to a year, company schools. will get you on the road. i prefer hauling refrigerated food myself, but everyone has their niche after awhile.

I went to roehl, see if there in your highering area. Some of these schools require you to pay for lodging. So if you go bring at least $600 to cover everything at a minimum.

Check out Stevens Transport. I went through the school in Dallas and I know that they have partner schools in other areas of the country. They even had me visit a school in NY to show off my truck to the students one day.

Sounds good I'll give those companies a call.

Avoid companies that push "lease program", otherwise, you will be employed, but still broke.Last edited: Nov 25, 2012
mycoalg Thanks this. -
I went to Swift's school. They will take the cost of school out of your check once you get your own truck, but will reimburse you for half of the amount they take out until they have reimbursed you the full cost. If you leave or are fired before you have paid them the cost of school, you will owe them that money.
The school wasnt bad. They answer they gave you when you asked them a question is, "Your mentor will tell you all about that." They teach you what you need to pass the tests (written and practical). Not much more. So ya, your mentor bears a heavy responsibility.
Cant complain, as an older worker, trucking is the almost the only industry that will hire you, other than that greeter thing at Wally World.mycoalg Thanks this. -
Just my take as I have been researching quite a bit...
Take the written portion of your test or at least study prior to starting school. I talked with Prime to get me started and the lady explained it was in my interest to study in advance.nascarchuck Thanks this.
