You probably just need a refresher course. Guys a lot older than you are just entering this trucking workforce. Here's some companies to research; also check their websites for regional or OTR driving, depending on what you want.
CLICK HERE for a list of trucking companies that hire new drivers.

    Also inquire with these:
    Dolphin Lines - Mobile, AL
    Marten Transport
    Benny Whitehead, Inc.
    Florida Rock & Tank Lines - Pensacola,FL

You can talk to their recruiters & submit online applications. Don't get involved with companies that want you to be a lease-operator. I'm sure they will all require more training before going out on your own. Make sure the blood pressure is good before reporting to any company. Don't worry, you will be in demand.

Something else to look for, since you're in the Florida panhandle; is companies that have a Florida terminal or nearby. Their websites will show where their terminals are. Makes it easier to get hometime.

This company will hire you with no experience. May not be what you're interested in though.

I'm in trucking school. Was bobtailing today and asked my trainer about this. My husband is rapidly approaching retirement age :biggrin_25525:. I asked if he would have any chance because he's *up there*. My trainer said absolutely. Companies, if they had a choice between an older worker and one who is young (20s) ... They'll take the older guy. I restated my husbands age, and he said yes. He recommended that my husband go talk to a company he would be interested and say that he's going to get a CDL.

My husband is healthy and in very good shape for his age, etc.

If you go with the bigger companies, then yes you will have to take a refresher course. The smaller companies won't likely require it. Think about your own benefits though, you have never driven and it has been a long time since you went through school, it may behoove you to take a refresher. Especially this time of year and being from Florida. Are you going to be comfortable your first week out driving a big truck in the snow while still learning the ropes of driving?

I think a good option for you if you don't want a refresher course is to go with a company like Armellini. They run team only so someone will always be with you yet you won't be getting training pay. Armellini pays very, very well also. You get paid by the mile (team miles) and you get paid per stop of which they have a lot of. Another bonus of driving for Armellini is that you are only out for 3-5 days before returning back to Florida.

My first job was with a company identical to Armellini (in fact they were next door to them) and I made very good money.

Jim, I am a few years younger looking to get my CDL. Like you my driving record is good, no arrests, no drugs, no alcohol, good health and a hard worker. I hope to hear that you are successful in getting work. It will make me a little more confident in pursuing this career.
