I just started with Swift a few weeks ago and am on the truck with my fiance who has been here since May. I have had to call Safety twice now because I am "logging my PTI's wrong".......was told as long as it takes for a Pre-Trip (on duty) and off duty for a Post Trip........he was told to log on-duty 5 minutes for Pre and 15 minutes for Post.

    What are you being told?

You log the pretrip, at least 15 mins to 30 mins. The post trip is only flagged. You finish the work day, park, go to line 2, then into HOS and flag post trip.

Which terminal are you out of? My fiance started out with Memphis and now we are out of Edwardsville. It seems to be different with the different terminals.

companies have different requirements...you wanna make sure you are getting answers here from swifties. dont take anyone's word for it who doesnt work for them.

1st answer applies to someone on paper logs,as evidenced by the answer of 15-30 minutes (paper logs are divided into 1/4 hour increments, thus 15 minutes is the minimum it takes for ANYTHING)...by your question im assuming you are on e-logs. other than that, ive always done the same as the other guy, as i was told. "as long as it takes" for pretrip (coincidentally it always took me 15 minutes on paper, and 5 minutes on elogs) and zero time for post trip. but if company tells you you must log posttrip as well, then im afraid thats the answer.

i dont work for swift, so dont take my word for it, other than the part that says "what your company told you to do"

Both Pre and Post trips are done on line 4. You are on duty when you do a PTI. I usually logged a Pre as a flag and a post 15 min. Usually so long as you LOG time somewhere DOT is somewhat happy. it is when you don't log a Pre/Post that they will then question you.

DOT requires you do a Post inspection and vehicle report and sign it... so this is where usually you log 15 on the Post.

But, ALL are done on line 4

blsqueak hit it on the head. That's how swift wants you to log it.

My situation may be a bit different than others since I am on shuttle, but when I do my pre trip I am always about to do something else that would require on-duty status such as hooking to a trailer.

I figured out that on the Q/C you can post multiple events in one flagging even by using the drop down menu for the first flag. I will go on duty, highlight the pre trip from the drop down, then use the right arrow key to move the cursor, hit the space bar a few times and enter "hook 531100" or what ever trailer I am hooking to. Then I just let the time run as I do it.

Also never put yourself on the drive line... let the Q/C do it for you, you will save a minutes.

I log it like I do it, minutes for pre (which isnt always 15 minutes usually less, I check my truck each time I stop) and I have always flagged a post trip even when I was on paper, used to put 15 for pre on paper though as you had to show 15 min increments.

Back in the olden days when I used to run outlaw paper logs for Swift lol. there were times I might have drawn lines while I was actually Off Duty Not Driving. I got much praise from the auditors for 100% compliant paper logs.

Fast forward to Elogs, I got chewed out that logging 15 minutes for Pre Trip is tantamount to falsification, they 'suggested' 30 minutes. A couple times I did send in Macro 32 from Line 1 or Line 2, that should have been logged from Line 4, they said a good time to send that macro is at the 'end of your driving day under Post Trip Line 4 for the little time it takes' -- 5 minutes is the minimum to 'change' a status to make it stick.

That said, I did make a mistake the other day, was walking the dog too long, got back to the truck to do the Pretrip time, discovered if I showed even 15 minutes I would be too close to late, so I started moving after only 4 minutes out the gate. By the time the thing automatically switched up to Drive Line 3, only 6 minutes had been logged as Pre Trip. Now I could have gone into the editing function and peeled some time off Line 1 and put it on Line 4 along with the 6 minutes but I left it like that and showed about 37 minutes at the customer on Line 4 dropping and hooking. Drove for a while more and next stop showed a few more minutes on Line 4 and drop down menu of 'Safety Check'. By the time at the end of my day I had close to 1 hour on Line 4 which raised no red flags, at least nobody sent a message about it.

I kind of shocked my safety dude the other day lol, I had been driving on Line 5 to get some food when my DM called and sent me for a drug test. I took off after the phone call, later I approved my logs like I do but discovered the 1:18 in drive time that should have been on Line 3 was on Line 1 (5). I called safety and asked them to move that 1:18 in time down to the drive line as I was on official duty. NO problem I just had to go back and re-approve the logs.

Here's a little advanced tip I use, if I know I will be putting time back on Line 3 before midnight, I do not send Macro 32 or Macro 10 til after the new day has started but of course that time would be logged Line 4 for those macros and it is only like 5 minutes and again under the auspices of Safety Check unless I have the need for fuel which is line 4 anyway, then I would send the macros along with Macro 11 after the fueling is done on Line 4.
