I deal with a lot of snowpacked roads. The nose of a 48 ft trailer is much longer than the nose of a 28 ft trailer that I also pull. By moving the fifth wheel towards the cab, I can gain about 2k lbs of additional weight on top of my drive wheels. If I used that same forward position on my shorter 28 ft trailer, the landing gear would damage my mudflaps and strike my tires. Also, if I hooked a 48 ft long box with the fifth wheel in the back position, my front (pusher tandems) would have little or no weight on them. Trust me, I hate moving my fifth wheel, and I never do it in the summer time. But I change positions based on the roadway. I cover a lot of steep mountain passes.
