I've read thru the posts and whatnot and really couldn't find a straight forward answer. Is a 53ft really needed or can you do the same with a 48ft? Most of the stuff I've pulled in a dry van that called for reefer or dry took up probably 42-46ft of trailer space. Actually, very few loads I've pulled in a 53ft came all the way to the rear. Just kind of curious! Thanks!

I don't see why not.You just can't haul as much. Now my comfort zone is 53 ft trls.I haul both. But I like 53 ft better and they're easier to back.

Well I pull 48' spread flats now. I'd rather back/pull that that the 53' dry van we also have. I just wasn't sure seeing how everything on the boards says 53' even though it's only 40' of freight lol

I used to pull a 53 reefer and never filled it. Never really liked it. I bought a 48ft reefer and had a totally better time out on the road in general. Never had a problem getting loads that I enjoy hauling. Then I began to not enjoy sliding the axles, so now I own a 48ft fixed spread reefer. I have no idea why.I didn't buy the spread sooner. In my opinion, the spread is the best. If you are inquiring towards a reefer & have the luxury of getting one built, opt for a 49 or 50ft with a 24 inch kingpin setting. Though, it will ultimately boil down to the type of loads you haul.

I just made a deal on a 53' reefer. Why? Seems to have been the cheapest and easiest to find that fit the bill now for what I wanted.

CrazyD has got me thinking of the 50.5' reefer though.

I have had more than a few dry loads where I completely cubed out a 53' box.

I know last friday I loaded 37K pounds of aluminum castings on the reefer. If filled that box entirely too. Front to back and floor to ceiling.

I'm just gathering info on the reefer market in general, this flatbed deal is starting to get old. Seem to have better rates for swinging doors rather than throwing chains and tarps lol

usually a 48 ft if a reefer. they are made much heavier anyways. the only time i think i ever had a 53 footer filled to the door was a port in new jersey. i hauled athletic hats and jerseys back to a local printer here and the thing was loaded floor to roof side to side and front to nose. hand loaded, no pallets.

####, I've noticed that the shorter east coast stuff seems to pay quite well. Gonna have to make some phone calls and talk to some more people to see if it's really worth it getting into it.

I am staring at $2.67 per running mile for the week right now on 1200 miles.

I'da been looking at $1.90 per mile with my dry van.

I'm also cutting my week short.

That's about what I've noticed is the average cpm too so that helps too. It's amazing what I see freight on the board for. Evans always has stuff posted for $1.05 per mile and it's unbelievable that some people will haul it just to get home. That's insane. I'd deadhead before I would take 40k+ at a buck a mile.
