Do you know what they are for?

Please vote but don't spoil the poll with the answer.

If you do not know, highlight below:

Yes they tell wind direction. But why is that important? It is because most plants use ammonia as a refrigerant. If there is a leak, you do not want to be downwind! It is an inhalation hazard.

On most plants a wind sock is there, of course, to show wind direction.

####, hope nobody saw the original post, almost ruined it... (Silly me not reading the whole OP) :biggrin_25513:

But the next question would be why do they need a windsock? My husband used to say at the feed mill, the smell of the plant was money, of course some houses in the area begged to differ, esp if the wind was blowing their way.

The wind-sock is there to make you aware of the direction of the wind, in the event of a chemical spill or any threat that may be spread through the wind....sock points east, your safe zone would be west ...etc etc....

    Always notice the windsock.

    It'll save your life.

Same reason DOT will put them along a highway. Gives you an indicator of dangerous cross winds.

While you're ultimately correct, it depends on your location and the nature of the spill. If for example the spill was H2S (hydrogen sulphide), there would be no reason to run towards it, as after your 3rd breath you'd be unconcious. 7-10 minutes later you're dead. The best escape is to treat it like a cross-wind and run either north or south, using your example.
