Why dont the military haul them? You should ask drivers about travelling cross country in a military convoy. A while back, we did a rant about taking the Greydog to a new job and how horrible it is. IMO, running in a military convoy is even worse than being cramped in a Greydog with the weirdos of the world. Military convoys are much worse.

Take the absolute worse driver you know, multiply him by 20, and tell all 20 to convoy together. It moves like a funeral procession on a thousand mile trek. If the guy in front of the convoy set his cruise on 25 mph and didnt stop for 25 minutes, he would be 10 miles ahead of the person in last place. On the interstate! We (drivers) couldnt do that if we tried on purpose.

Another reason other than what was listed is that military convoys stick out like a sore thumb. A high profile load is more secured if you remain discreet about it.

Certain things are hauled by military or a GM-GS grade civilian driver, what most people fail to realize is that no one is going to give anyone off a load board some sensitive load and let them haul it. Between qualification of the company and the drivers it can take up to 6 months of back ground checks just to have access to areas let alone cut someone a load and let them go with it.

To answer your question, yes there is money in it, but you have to "pay your dues"! U don't graduate from swift or WERNER schools and get this type of job!
And after reading some of the other blogs and replies, it makes me wonder just who and what they are thinking. Most of the secret or top secret stuff is just that!!!!!!' But they still haven't transported anything of great importance until they are followed or"shadowed" by an Apache helicopter or stealth fighter! That is f*+*=~* AWSOME!

I don't what to be critical here but you are really off on your information. I'll tell you what I can about these trucks that drivers have seen that look just a little different than a normal truck. I used to load these trucks and even we could not go up to the tractor and look in. Not until they were on "60 Minutes" they would let us look inside.

The trucks are called SST's. That stands for Safe, Secure, Transport. The drivers are Federal Agents and they are required to go through training like a Marine. Very extensive weapons training. The military has no vehicles that even come close to these trucks. The main office they come out of is the "Office of Secure Transportation" located in Albuquerque, NM. You can look at the "Office of Secure Transportation" web page and you can get what they haul and all the goodies to apply for a trucking job. Their drivers are not considered truck drivers since their primary mission is security. I will go on and say that no one has a chance of gaining entry into these trailers. They will meet a certain death. I'm not kidding.

If you meet the age requirements and think you might like this type of driving go get the applications and keep trying. Years ago these guys made a lot of money. But now it has slowed down some and I'm not sure how much they make. I know there's three Agents in the truck and a few elsewhere. They take 8 hour shifts or they used to anyway. The truck does not stop, it keeps rolling until it at it's destination. They can stop for food if they like and maybe some drivers have seen them. They will be the truck that's off by it's lonesome. If they like they do not have to scale or even stop. If your lucky you'll see this and wonder why isn't anyone going after that truck. It's because they called the scale from the truck and told them what's up. But when I talked with the drivers they only do that when needed. They do not want attention. Look them up and check it out. I'll also tell you that loading these trucks had to be done perfect and a certain way. The Agents did not load the trucks. They would shut down some gear and tell us it's clear. Then we would do our thing. When in the trailer you sure did not want to think about the systems installed and what would happen if they misfired!

It's a good job especially for a young single guy. They are not looking at experience so much because they teach on a simulator like an airplane. I do know that every so often they do hire and if I was young I'd do it.
