Just curious, I keep hearing that during the 10 day orientation W/S teaches you how to shift going down mountains. How hard is it and has there ever been a problem when teaching someone how to do it.

Thx but I understand what run off ramps are and I know about going down a lower gear than you came up. This is something that I've read exclusively for Watkins Shepard about teaching you to downshift when going down a mountain.

Neither here nor there weather W/S teaches it or not its something that every driver needs to know. Personally I hate the way the book tells us how to go down mountains. For me (I have a Jake I know some drivers do not). If I climb a hill in 6 over I come down in 5 direct Jake on, and I have only once had to touch the pedal coming down the mountains. Touched it lightly only put 12lbs to all the brakes and didn't take my foot off the pedal either. Actually went against the book on that no brake fire brakes weren't any hotter than they are after coming through the city, and unlike some drivers my compressor wasn't running by the bottom of the hill either. I take a gear and a half over a gear better to go to slow than too fast IMO but that's me. I'd rather be in total control than lose any control.

I don't like the use of the term "while going down hill". Once I start down I'll just let it ride, nice and slow. Like the signs say, "Don't be fooled, your not to the bottom yet."

In going down grade they will have you stab it down to about 1000 rpm and downshift quickly no big deal.

Appreciate all the answers guys/gals, I'm gonna be going there and honesty I'm a bit worried about it. I've driven out east but never the mountains out west.

It's not that big of a deal. Just be patient and remember that the weight of your load has alot to do proper procedure when going down a pass.
