I guess we'll be going thru orientation at the same time, just at different terminals. I'm starting June 3 for the Texas Regional fleet with orientation in Abilene. I'll try and keep everyone posted on how it goes. Incidentally, I have 21 years OTR with the last 8 being Texas regional pulling a flatbed. I hope I have made the right decision, going with Cypress. I was impressed with the 99% home every weekend plan. I have small children at home and don't want to experience their childhood over the phone, you know. It will be a switch going from an 85 mph truck to a 65 mph truck but that's what audio books are for! As far as what I've heard about their drivers, they seem very happy and loyal to Cypress. They haul a lot of sheet rock and bricks. A lot of drop and hook with the sheet rock being pre-tarped, so that will be nice, although it seems the only tarps they handle are the monster lumber tarps with 8-foot drops! They will most likely stick me in one of their older International trucks, at least until I can prove myself and my work ethic. They have a lot of older 379 Petes and the newer trucks seem to be mostly 386 Petes, all with big Cummins motors, just cut back on speed. Like I said, we'll see how it goes!

It didn't go as I had hoped. First of all they said "Home Weekends" and then tell you they cannot promise to get you home every weekend. They said, "The ad didn't say "every" weekend! I thought that was kind of underhanded and as such, one of the drivers quit the first day. Secondly, as a driver with 21 years experience, I kind of expected top pay but they started me $0.02 cpm less than the website implied. But the big kicker is the equipment. Their website and FaceBook page has pictures of new Pete 356's and new Int'l ProStars but what they don't say is that only the drivers who have been there a while get THOSE trucks! They offered me a '99 FLD-120 with 1.6 million miles OR an '01 379 Pete with way over a million miles and which only has one fuel tank to keep the weight down! Both trucks were just shot! They'd been band-aided and patched and maybe they ran but I have never driven such a POS and I don't want to down-grade my standard after all these years! I mean, I don't have to have a NEW truck but come on! I don't want to be in the shop weekly either! And, they run caps on the trailers, too! Just another sign of a company trying to cut corners to save money. Now for the big deal-breaker: As I said, I have 21 years on the road and the last 8 have been pulling a flatbed. They want to put me with a trainer for a week! Excuse me??? It sounds more to me like they want a team for an extra $100/day! No thank you!
Now, I have a mortgage and I need to work so I finished the orientation and I may even have to go out with this "trainer" for the week, just to keep the bills paid but it's sad when a driver is on the internet, on his cell phone, looking for another job DURING the orientation! Every day, after getting back to the motel, I'd be up several hours looking for another job opportunity on craigslist and other sites. I was making calls to other companies during lunch and breaks every day. After getting back home, I put in a couple other applications and explained my situation to their recruiters. I may have found a job at a company called J H WALKER out of Houston. They have a terminal in the DFW metro area and haul a lot of steel pipe out of Houston, to the oil patch. And claim to tarp fewer than 25% of their loads! They run newer 379 Petes and Columbia and Cascadia Freightliners. No training program because they only hire drivers with 2 years recent anyway. Three day orientation and they let me choose a truck! I'll try to keep everyone posted but HOPEFULLY, I will be too busy! LOL
