Good evening,
I am looking to start-up a trucking business with a Ram 4500-5500 truck and a 48' step deck trailer. I am based out of NC and am currently studying for the Knowledge based CDL test. If I pass, the next step would be the Skills test of the CDL test. Unfortunately, I do not have a truck/trailer at this time. Is it possible to rent one to take the skills test, or how does that work? Will I need to obtain a CDL permit initially to do this?
Any guidance is appreciated. From what I have read online, there does seem to be 3rd-party CDL providers that can help with this, but it does seem you will need to take the classes prior to the skills test.
Not sure if this needs to be in the hotshot/expediters page, but figured this was a start.
Thanks,
Dave

Depends where you are and where you take the test. A local college near me provides the vehicles for tests. Call around and ask. Good luck.

I don't know how they do this in NC but to the best of my knowledge you need a semi truck /trailer to take the skill test and if you are planning on pulling a hot shot then you only need a class B license not a CDL and for hot shots yes you can rent a dolly if it has the fifth wheel on it so you can hook to your step while taking the skill test find a weigh station in NC & pull in there and ask they are glad to help most of them anyway

Casual trucker you are correct though if he were to be under 26k gross, regardless of trailer gvwr he would not need a cdl. The main problem with under 26k is payload. I have a hard time believing guys can run a 1 ton 40ft trailer load 12-14k on it and scale it legally. Even being under 26 you still fall under commercial laws with the DOT number on your truck so why limit yourself I guess is my point. Class A with no restrictions would be the way to go IMO regardless of what you are running. Things don't always pan out like we want them too so it gives you a few more options. This is just my way of thinking though if the OP don't want a cdl by all means do what makes you happy and what you believe is best for you. This is just my advise and my opinion on the matter at hand.Last edited: Jul 1, 2013
