They never paid me...
First off, this isnt my first company, I did local/regional for 3.5 years ago, I got tired of seeing OHP motor carrier (never ticketed), highway Nazis. I wanted to see other states and less city stopping this time.
I was required to get a refresher in at a school, because I took a few years off. I chose Boyd out of 17 other pre-hires out of the school, because they offered the best starting vs. mileage vs. equipment. They also didnt have any bad feedback on this forum (until now).
They hired me after a week of background and referrals, they will tell you, you are not hired until after you get your physical done at their doctor on the first day. If you make it to day 2 you pretty much made the cut and are hired on day 3.
I started at Boyd; they sent me for training In Cincinnati Oh, they paid for a bus ticket/check for driving there.
First off the recruiter as most do, flat out lied to me, told me I would be making .38 a mile after a week of training, and get 2500 miles a week and $20 a tarp, roughly $50k my first year.
No, $400 a week for first 7 weeks, then .38 a mile, BUT, I would never see over 2100 miles but average 2000. My first year, I would make about $34,000, thats a little short of $50k. Honestly I made more than this driving local.
I could drive a dry van, make more than that, and not have to tarp. Did I mention I had to buy my own ladder unless I wanted to climb 13 with a 150# lumber tarp, which most are torn up. They also had to approve me to do so.
They paid for a luxury suite at the Baymont inn I was required to stay here; it was a lovely 1 star hotel . I would have been better off sleeping in my car. It cost $21 a night
Day 3 you will take a driving test, you will learn to drive their way. Using as little fuel as possible... You must float gears, and cannot touch the throttle. The test itself is a joke, its 1 mile taking right hand turns, and back a straight line. Your trainer Burt takes you out, hes a great guy, he will help you learn how to float if you dont know how.
I was there until my 4[SUP]th[/SUP] day, when 'Betty' the HR manager fired me for no reason. I talked with her the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] day, she was a nice southern bell, next day she turned into a complete opposite #####, in many less words, said I was fired, no reason and she didnt have to give me one because Alabama is a non-disclosure state. What she said, and the way she said it was completely unprofessional and out of line. They could have at least told me in the morning instead of wasting my day
They did however give me a check to pay for my trip home. I was told I was supposed to receive a check for the 4 days I was there because I was hired. I checked with my bank and no such deposit was made or coming through.
So I called and asked where my check was, they said I would not be receiving one because once again, they are headquartered in Alabama .. Obviously she didnt understand that Ohio law has home rule in Ohio, they are required to pay me for my time there. Now I have to file with the state, department of commerce, and most likely take them to small claims court to get paid.
At no time did I do anything wrong, the terminal manager, trainer, recruiter had no idea why I was let go, they were all trumped. I was an employee; I had my pay card, had employment verification, and had all of my uniforms. I could have been fired because she didnt like my name for all we know. I was top of my driving class, also have a BA and was working on my JD when I began, so I was an asset for the company.
So Basically
Cons:
-They flat out lied to me about my pay and miles
- Flat out lied about home time, every 2 weeks, not every weekend
- Failed to pay me
- They may have 2009+ equipment, but they are beat to hell, they dont fix damage unless DOT makes them, they also dont clean them before reassigning them, god forbid you get one formerly driven by a slob.
-Cargo holder on the back of the cab rattles like no other over the radio
- Very strict fuel program, no idle, no revving allowed
- Camera on front, and on Driver, live feed and 12 second recordable (could be a +)
- Not allowed to use phones/Bluetooth headsets AT ALL, ^ Camera enforced
- You have to go through a 1-3 hour safety check if youre within 50 miles of a terminal
- You have to fuel up at a terminal if your low and within 100 miles and to fuel, you have to do a safety check, kiss 4 hours for that day goodbye.
- 95% of what you haul has to be tarped, might as well tarp it all, because customer will cry if there plastic pipe gets wet.
-Elogs, you have to check in every time you do anything or you wont get paid, got to piss, got to mark it
- tarp pay, they pay $20, 1 time, takes hour and half to tarp a load, another 30 minutes to roll it up, you get paid $20 for 2 hours work, 2 hours not driving.
Pros:
-Electric APUs (dies after a few hours on older ones)
-Most trucks less than 600k, 99% are 09+ International Prostars (could be a con)
- $85 fuel bonus a month (kind of a joke when you think about it)
- Elogs, the company can make sure you are within the dot regs; you will never be over 11/14.
- They dont use QUALCOMM, but they do use their own system.
-weekly pay, direct deposit or pay card
As with any company, watch your backside for the knife.

Oh God, it's going to be one of those threads!Lonesome Thanks this. -
Yea it is
-
Not going to be one of those threads.
Seriously, I did nothing to get kicked, and they already did the background/dac check and came back clear -
I worked for them many many years ago. I see that nothing has changed.
Go figure. -
You did'nt get out of line with a customer did you?You drove before this company, nothing has change since you took time off from driving except worse. You should know not to take any trucking job just because you like what the recruiter had to say.
-
How did you manage to average 2000 miles per week if you were only there for four days all of which were orientation?
