I'm currently looking for a decent truck driving school here in the Los Angeles area. I've been looking at Dootson Truck Driving School, fairly well known here in L.A. because of there TV commercials back in the '70s and '80s. There tuition seems to be pretty low, anywhere from $1000 to $2000. The $2000 program only gives you 25 half-hour lessons, 12 1/2 hours total, which doesn't sound like a whole lot. Does anybody know the reputation of this school and if the major carriers will hire from them? Or are you better off going to the more expensive schools like Roadmaster?

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Here's the deal. Schools are there to get you up to speed on safety, hours of service, vehicle pre-tripping. Then they book test you and you have to pass written tests to prepare you for written tests at DMV for your CDL permit within the first THREE DAYS to continue on with getting a CDL, that may be the 12 hours you're seeing. For most mega carriers to accept you, hire you, you must have already attended a 160 hour course and apply to them within 90 days. If the school is offering less than 160 hours you should probably avoid them or at least find out where their graduates are going. There are carriers who will train you, blah blah blah, but that has a dark side for some but look into and see if it's for you.

With the short school, Maverick will probably hire, if you're in the hiring area and so will CRST in Fontana. Check their websites.

Depends on what part of LA area you live. There are a lot of schools. If you are near or not far from Chatsworth, I would look into Alliance School of Trucking. They are amazing and have been great. There are two other members from here that have signed up there after visiting a few schools. According to drivers I talk to in that area, as well as the DMV in Arleta they are the school to attend if you can. She my posting for more information. Alliance School of Trucking, Chatsworth, California
