I've been looking forward to applying at Old Dominion ever since I read about how happy the drivers are and how much of a good, quality company it sounds like. I want my first driving job to be with a good company that I can be proud to drive for , or at least happy driving for. Today in class someone told me I have basically no chance at all of getting hired there because it's all about who you know, and as a driver with no previous experience and no '' connections'' my application may only be accepted by the trash can... Does this sound accurate...? It makes me feel disappointed and slightly bitter if getting a local ltl driving job is all about connections. I'm going to try to apply any ways of course but I hadn't expected to hear something like that, lol.
What a flippin let down, is it really about who you know????

You can try but I think they want a couple years experience. Ltl jobs have a long line and if you are just finishing school I wouldn't get mt hopes up. .. good luck
Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -
okay so let me break it down youngin you don't have to start of the first two years will suck hit the road jack what you got experience it's kind of like getting your associate's degree that's your first two years your next two years did God provide you with the willing chance to make it through without an accident will be like your bachelors hell if you can make it 6 10 well you got a masters or doctorate anyhow its gonna be tough it's going to suck but it all be worth it once you got some experience if you can everybody says the day of the owner operator is dead I don't think so there still a way to make good morning you just gotta find the right contracts in about 2 years you'll be able to qualify to be insured as an owner operator and to be accepted by companies as an owner operator don't lose faith don't give up and don't slow down metaphorically speaking keep your head up

I agree.. don't just go on the word of some guy in class.. and have some drive and determination... Why would you be bitter and even thinking of giving up when you haven't even attempted to try...
I got on with a good company.. but, I did the work and got my foot in the door.. don't think you are gonna la.d your dream job from your couch.. go to the company and apply in person...bigdogpile, MZdanowicz, KF7WTV and 1 other person Thank this. -
Do you always believe what others tell you? Just cause they say it, and it may be true in some areas, doesn't make it the case for everyone in all areas. I moved to a tiny town after graduating CDL school. I had no connections with anyone and no experience. I still got picked up by a local carrier. Apply with Ebby Brown or continue on with Conway.
Btw, I had classmates, instructors, and school faculty members tell me I can't go local without experience. They insisted that I don't waste my time. I was turned down by three other carriers before I was picked up. Keep trying. You said you live in the Chicago area, so you got way more options than I had when I graduated.Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -
Personally.. I think it is easier to get on locally cause you can go talk to them face to face.. even if they don't hire you you had a learning experience and made a contact.. even a couple of the companies that turned me down said to consider them when I got some experience..
Even though I got on with a good company and hope to be with them awhile.. I have some fall backs... And that is always good to have...
Don't get discouraged and go for what you want.. the best things are not always the easiest...Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -
Nightwind- It sounds like the old "male ego" hit home. Your doing good in class will cause this.I have seen this many times. Dismiss it now and follow your course. Never tell anybody your plans!! I wish you the best. Your going to make it fine. MikeXile and Nightwind8830 Thank this. -
You don't need OTR experience to get into a local LTL company... I never spent a day otr. Some of these companies are so short they will hire you with a beating pulse and a CDL. Just apply
MZdanowicz, Marksteven, CenutryClass and 2 others Thank this.
