Hi i'm about to get into hauling cars i already bought 06 dodge 3500 5.9 and 08 kaufman wedge 3/4 car trailer . I passed the written class A CDL test and have my road test scheduled next week for my CDL.1. Can I register the truck on my name or I should put it on my LLC ?i already registered the trailer on my name by the way...2.What weight should i register the truck for right now title says GVWR is 14000 and should i get a special tags for it ( i know they cost lot of money)? i'm definitely gonna be over 26000 pounds cause i'm planning to haul 4 cars so its gonna be around 30-32k pounds all together.3. will guys from DOT at scales give me trouble for not having special tags when i'm doing that as commercial with over 26k pounds but with CDL class A. just trying to save some money :) Thank you

the truck needs to be registered for the combined weight rating, if your truck is rated for 14k and your trailer rated for 16k you would register the truck for 30k

First off you need your own authority (unless your going to lease onto a car carrier). If your llc is getting paid, your stuff should be reg under the llc. You need a commercial base plate for the truck.

What Ever Name is on the doors must mach the name on the Registration of the truck and match your MC/DOT unless you are leased to a carrier or its a $250 fine

You can run it all in your Personally name and then run under a Name As Your trucking company name not sure how to really expain it but you can run under a different name then the registered name alot of bigger fleets have more then one name and are doing the same thing.
Only downside you get in a wreck and your f"ed they can sue you for your personally assets as well as company assets. That is why you need the LLC not for legal reasons but to protect you.
And if you are just now applying for your numbers do not be in a rush if i rem right it took about 6 weeks to get mine years ago but they may have sped up the process since then

Yes you can register the truck and trailer in your name and lease yourself to your llc. It is a liability if you get in an accident however. Unless your kaufman is a 53' trailer with flips you won't fit 4 cars. Yes you have to have an apportioned plate on the truck. As far as weight I plated mine at 36,000 in Tennessee it cost less than 600 for 35 states. You will need ifta also at anything over 26,000. And you need the insurance before you apply for your mc number.

What type of the registration allows my truck/trailer to run through all states?

If I'm not mistaken, an LLC won't protect you if you're in an accident and you're the one driving. When an accident in a commercial vehicle happens and it's the truck driver's fault, they sue two people. They sue the company and they sue the truck driver.

Let's say John Doe owns a trucking company and is driving one of his trucks and causes an accident. Well they can't sue John Doe, the company owner, because he is protected by the LLC. So they sue the company, Doe Transport, LLC. Then they will also sue the driver of the truck, who is, you guessed it, John Doe.

Now if Sam Adams was driving the truck, Doe Transport, LLC would be sued and the driver, Sam Adams, would be sued. John Doe's personal assets would be safe.

No they aren't suing you twice, because as an LLC, you and the company are two separate entities. Which is why they can sue the company AND the driver. Make sense?
