Guys/Gals, I have a question about vacation time. Little about me, I retired from the military two years ago and went to a truck driving school and recieved my CDL. I immediatle got a job (not driving a truck). I have not driven a truck since then but am wanting to now. I know that I need to go back to school. I am willing to do this. I see a lot of these comapnies offering benefits - Health insurance, 401K, vision, etc. The only benefit I am interested in is vacation. Unpaid or paid. What I am thinking is going back to school and getting on with a company but 7 days vacation won't cut it. Are the benefits negotiable with a company? Is pay negotiable? Can I negotiate vacation? What I am thinking is maybe going OTR for a year and then buying my own truck (owner/operator) for the sole reason of making sure that I have the vacation time that I want and some income.
I sure appreciate your time.

In reasearching companies seems like 1 week after 1 year is standard. You could always ask.

If you make them a good hand and you prove yourself worthy and you don't participate in their health insurance plan, many outfits don't mind if you take off several weeks, a month and come back. You may want to work a 9 months or more before attempting this. You'll of course get a different truck. They will put you on unpaid "family leave" and essentially you become an inactive employee and come back whenever, within reason. Stay gone too long and you're liable to have to go through the whole hiring process all over again.

Stexan, I was really hoping to hear something like that. Will big outfits do this or just smaller/local companies?

There's a few drivers on this forum that take extended vacations with company approval. There's a few like me that have homes overseas and want at least a month off. Many companies will do this for you. Some companies will hire you and send you through their own little refresher course without a full CDL school, depends on where you live if in their hiring area.

The larger and mid size companies are probably more apt to do this then a small company. They are constantly hiring and always have open equipment, and it's easier to "rehire" a known good employee then hire a questionable new-hire. It's important though to you make sure when you leave your are not "quitting" so the time between when you leave and when you come back can not technically be called "unemployed" for future reference if you decide to go elsewhere.

I think Millis Transfer was offering 1 week after 6 mos then another after 6 more so 2 weeks first year.

TMC gives 7 days paid, a week of for xmas and a week off for 4th of july. If their equipment isnt moving they are paying for insurance, tags, permits etc. still. I dont know of any that offer more vacation then that. If ur an o/o u can take off when ever you want

vacation sure you get one my company offer $300 week for vacation first year, second year 1 week $300, 3rd year 2wk $500. depending on company they average what you made a week average it out sometime not including per diem. o/o u can take vacation whenever you want and how long you want pretty muck. but just no this as o/o you will not get no money from company for vacation and you want be earning none either check with state with you being a vet you may get them to pay for school or give you good discounts. and with you being a vet trucking companies slob at the mouth to hire vets. I no crete has a special program for hiring vets. but you have to attend accredited school. make sure you get all endorsements if you decide to go back. its good money in trucking sometime. make sure you are getting a good per diem my company pay .12mi. o/o don't go under $1mi to earn money. NEVER LEASE ITS A TRAP!!!

Mate works for IWX, forgoes benefits and stays on base rate, but takes 1-6 months off at a time.
As swtexan said, don't expect same truck back.
It does happen, can be negotiated, with some give and take.
