Hey Mickey what do most people do about lodging? I've heard of students who commute the distance, while some rent a room there close to the school. I'm not sure either of those will be an option for me. Just curious here, thanks and good luck man!

Most people drive home. Live about 1hrs and 10 min from the school. I thought for the first week I would stay at a local hotel so I could get used to the long day. I've decided it was the best decision I made. I will probably make the drive for a few weeks and then stay again during the testing phase.. Some local motels give the students a special price. Between $35-50 a night depending on where... I've been getting back to the room exhausted at night. We have had homework every night too.

Yesterday and today we have been learning 4 of the range excersizes. Coupling and uncoupling, straight line backing between 2 trailers and stopping within 12" of a barricade (dock), pretrial inspection and a forward excersize where you have assorted obstacles to maneuver around. Yesterday the instructors drove and showed us the right way to do it. We also had classroom stuff. Today we broke up into groups and did the exercises ourselves. We will be doing these for 3 weeks before we learn some more backing exercises. Tomorrow 1/2 the class goes out on the road with a tractor trailer and start learning to drive the big diesels!! Ill be out with 2 other students and an instructor. We will be out most of the day. The other half of the class will be doing range exercises. They will drive out on the road on Friday and we will be on range exercises. Works that was every week...one day range and next day on the road.

I am very impressed with the school and the instructors. It is not an easy course. They really are trying to train us to be professional drivers, not just get your CDL.

One guy in class went to a Stevens Transport school and didn't make it through. He said the difference in training is astounding. 3 people from his class passed the cdl test and the other 7 that failed and was sent home now have to pay the $7000 for the school bill they can't work off....

Man, you've just given me some good food for thought. After submitting five online applications this week to companies with schools, I'm thinking your way is the smartest. My first response was from Roehl and it generated some real enthusiasm in me, but your statement about Stevens really puts it all into perspective. Not to mention that I've never heard a negative comment about Johnston' s program there that you're attending.
Thanks for the tips and again, good luck! It sounds like the school will provide definite challenges and keep me busy. I'm pumped for ya man!

You are correct to have second thoughts on company sponsored training. Unless your financial situation is so dire that you cannot save up $1000 plus living expenses to pay for your education this is the way to go. Many more options. I went to a Sage sponsored school at the community college in Yadkinville. It was decent but Johnston County is probably better.

Mine cost around $3500 for a 6 week course. One advantage of the Sage school was it was 1 on 1 in the truck with the instructor so every driving session was 4 hours of seat time. They also provide a job placement service for life. I could call the director of the school tomorrow for job leads should I want to change jobs. While in school she arranged a meeting with my current boss and the VP of training with my company. They came to the school and took me and another student out to lunch. That is above and beyond the norm. Bottom line is if you want options paying for your education will provide more of them.
