I had no clue about that either. The day I went to have the yard and road test with the DDS was the day I found out. I went back to the truck driving school to get my certificat. The girl at the desk gave me this diploma stating "
FOR SCORING 95% ON ROAD SKILL TEST AND ABOVE 3,9 GPA" I received the Top Gun Award of the class. That really is the truth. Then I went the next day and took my hazmat , double and triple and tanker endorsments at once.

So long as you don't have any issues with the company that you're working for, then there's no reason for them to post anything negative on your DAC.

A lot of good advice here - and on the forum in general.

If owner operator is REALLY where you want to be . . . I would get 6-12 months experience first, save $30,000, buy a modest truck for $20,000 and lease on to a reputable carrier. Stay away from any lease purchase offered.

There is some really good threads in the owner operator section on everything required to own a truck - and there is a lot required.

Good luck sir. And from one immigrant to another - thanks for doing it the right way! Expensive, isn't it!!

    MZdanowicz and Christian23 Thank this.

That is exactly what I plan on doing. I went looking at older trucks . $25k for a 2007 Volvo with Cummins engine. Aprox 700k miles on it. I have quotes for insurance as well. I still want to get road experience though. I am not trying to rush it. I am just a fast learner and a good driver and very good in mechanics as well. I ha e been maintainig my cars an trucks and vans as long as and for as long as I had them. My current Ford E 150 van has almost 300 kmoles on it and believe me ,I never replce not even the thermostat norwater pump. All about fluids and listening to your vehicle. And....of course, God's help. Yes, becoming an American citizen the legal way costed me a Lot of money . That was 15 years ago. But here is where I want to live and die. I love this country. As far as I am concerned , my blood is American. Thank you very much my good friend. I thank all of you for advise. You all have been so nice to me on this site. What a wonderful experience to chat with truckers. Hope to be one of you guys one day soon. God bless you all and God bless your dear ones.

Why do you want to buy your own truck? There is only one correct answer to this question. SO YOU CAN MAKE MORE MONEY. Yes, you may be totally comfortable with driving a truck and won some awards in your class. However, as soon as you own your own truck, driving becomes likely the easiest task you will have to do. You need to know HOW to make money for the work you will be doing. And you also need to know your costs to make your truck go. Let's say you buy a truck, trailer, and all your expenses come to 1.20 per mile, not including your pay to yourself. Let's say if you were a company driver they would pay you 0.40 per mile. Let's also say that if you signed on under another's authority, they would pay you 1.60 per mile as o/o. In both scenarios, the driver still gets paid 0.40, however, if it is YOUR truck, now you get to eat the bill if (when) you need to spend some big dollars into the truck! Who is further ahead?? If you think your own authority is the way to go, yes there is good money in it, IF you know your markets and how to tic-tac-toe the good loads, when to hold out a day for a better rate, when to drive empty, when to just stay at home and not even bother.

I a understand and I thank you for your words encouragement. The thing is .......I am old. To start a new career at 45 is not like I have the whole time in the world. You guys did it years and years ago. You were smart. Now , I have to get on the fast lane. Trust me. Today I was on the phone with at least 5 companies. Chinatown here has recommended me some good ones. God bless him . I do not apply online. I first call them then I will decide. I am still amazed how nice you all are here. I feel so good talking to you guys.
