Your chances are directly proportional to the distance you live from a dedicated route. The further you live, the least chance you have.
theyre not going to have you run three weeks back and forth on a deducted run only to have to find you a load home, then a load back... Nor will the DH you.
if I'm hearing correct the Walmart deducted guys have to live within 50 miles, so it's not a stretch to think other deducted routes would be the same. -
Btw dedicated does not necessarily mean more hometime. Hometime policy is the same.
However if you live near the customer or on the route, you will have more opportunity to "visit" home as the delivery schedule allows. -
I live on the truck so I am technically home every night. I only intend to go "home" to get my mail and that can be sent to a closer location. I would assume that a dedicated route would have more consistent miles and keep me in familiar locations and thus, in theory, reduce the chance of an accident.

You're driving local roads with 4-wheelers who have the mentality of suicidal ####roaches. You really think that's going to reduce your chances of having an accident?
-
Yes, a more familiar beast, but no - your theory is flawed, the chances of an accident will remain a constant.
-
Yes, makes sense. I was just thinking of my self. Didn't take them into account. Good point.

Hahahaha, ran Olney, IL Walmart for 5months now without a previous accident in 8 months of otr, & during time there managed to cream 2 deer in 2 days, a low flying owl, as well as shut down i57 nb for 2hrs when I skated across the 2in thick ice coated interstate at 20mph 500 ft from my exit, jackknifing a walmart dry van trailer across both lanes, and putting tractor into median facing oncoming traffic in the big ice storm a couple weeks ago.
Knowing the roads doesn't help when half your miles are empty with crappy, windy weather & ice EVERYWHERE.
Got sentimental for being back in Wyoming during winter just to get out of Illinois/Indiana winter hell this year.
Also leads you into complacency when you start knowing all the routes by heart.
Also gets boring as heck seeing the same things over again while not getting compensated what local LTL/fuel haulers get for the repetition.
BTW, the dedicated guys there can go home as much as they want as their loads permit as long as they are there for work when they are supposed to be. Most drive their personal vehicles to the dc & stay for their week the take a 34 at home.Last edited: Jan 25, 2014
