Best pick-up truck/5 car trailer combination?

Thats what everyones been saying the whole time.

 

Go ahead and do something else, that leaves more cars for us that KNOW what we are doing out here, you need to quit watching Shipping Wars.

I did the dually, 2 car enclosed, get 2 Bentleys in an enclosed trailer and try to stop, it ain't happening. I went to my Pete, pulling the SAME trailer, got 1 mile less to the gallon, had a nice sleeper, safer to stop and the engine hardly worked at all. I was even more relaxed as I didn't have to worry about overworking the truck or not getting stopped. You couldn't pay me to go back to hauling with a dually.


You think that new truck won't break down, you need to do some reading there Scooter.

Go ahead and put the dually on a 5 car, just let me know how it works out for you when you can't get stopped and run into a school bus full of kids, I hope you have a $10 million liability policy.

Although I can to a degree understand the fear/concern of most of these guys about jumping from a pickup truck into a semi, I never thought that it would have to be explained, in detail, to a guy that already has a CDL AND 5 years of OTR in a semi.

That is that part that I didn't get.

 

Seems to be two kinds, those that want to pull a 1-2 car and run without signs, and those who want a 5-6 car behind a one ton....never a happy medium.

 

Don't get so caught up on the NEW thing. The minute you sign on the dotted line your truck went from 140k to 100k and the keys are not even in your hand yet. Don't take the depreciation hit AND a loan. Heck I am looking at buying another truck soon and I can get the truck, stepdeck and car hauler all for less than the cost of a new truck combined.

These trucks are designed to go 1 million plus miles. A team can do that in 4-5 years. A solo driver can do that in 8-10 years. So if you got a truck that say has 1/2 million miles on it, you pay maybe 1/3 the price of a new one and still have 5+ years of usefulness left if you take care of it. Then you rebuild it and keep going. These things are not throwaway like today's cars are. Heck with the price of new cars and trucks now days, I will never buy one.

You know that 25 grand your friend just spent? I believe that is a new motor? Well he now has 8-10 years on that motor if he takes care of it. He is probably still way below the cost of a new truck.

The advice people have given you in this thread is not just for safety reasons, it is to keep you from failing. There may be a few that do not want the competition but for the most part these guys try and help. People come and go in this business all the time and it is the ones that ask the questions and listen and do things the right way that are the most welcome. Then you have people that I like to compare to teenagers, they know everything. Then after they fail it is like hitting your mid twenties and you realize that mom and dad were not as dumb as you once thought they were.

The thing is, Murphy like to move in where there is room. If you have an emergency fund to deal with breakdowns, then with the luck of most people, the chances seem to decrease for a major breakdown. Not saying you will not have one but things just seem to be different when you have the money to fix the little problems before you end up with a big one.

What is with the love affair with a dually? I have a 1999 crew cab chevy that I slammed and bagged and it pulls my boat! She stays home when its time to work. I just put together a nice little 3-4 setup with a two axle pete 389 w/ a 36" sleeper and 225" wheelbase. Trailer is a 48' single axle made by Pro Weld in Rancho Cucamonga,CA. I can put three Escaldae ESV's on that trailer and would never go over the grapevine with that trailer and a dually. Its just another example of people trying to get into auto transport with minimal investment. Doesnt Work!!!!
