The issue as I understand it is that without the physical, your permit is not valid for interstate driving. That's the kicker. DOT is making us self-certify now to drive interstate and that can't be done without the physical. Since you will be driving interstate with your instructor, you need to be able to self certify. Without that, you will have to take your WA permit and your prime physical to the MO DOL and transfer to a MO permit that is valid for interstate driving. Clear as mud?

Thank you Highway 101, that confirms what I thought I knew! LOL (At this stage one isn't always sure!)

The information on the WA CDL site states that "all CDL holders" (in bold print on their web page) must self-certify. It does not pertain to CDL permit holders since they don't hold CDLs yet. At least that's what I'm getting from the WA DOL site.

At least that is what happened to some of the people in my class last week. They came with a permit, but weren't self certified. They had to take their prime physical and their home permit and transfer it to MO. It was a lot cheaper than testing for the permit here, so it may be just as easy for you to do that than paying for a worthless physical.

Thanks XYZ. Interesting information, I'll have to get some clarification on this from my recruiter. I'll probably get the WA permit anyway since it's only $10. If I have to transfer it that sounds easier than having to take the MO permit test during orientation week.

Run it by your recruiter and see what they say. But, like highway says, go ahead and get the WA permit. If when you get here, you have to pay 10 or 15 bucks and transfer it, it's still less hassle then dealing with testing for it after you get here.

And trying to post via cell phone from the motel room leads to saying almost exactly what you said while I was scribbling out my last reply.

I had a good laugh about that one! Thanks again!

Give DMV a call and ask, "Does a CDL instruction permit holder who will be driving across state lines require the medical self certification."
According to the WA DMV website the answer is no, but it is not really addressed for students.
Here in NV, it is not required as you are not holding a CDL only a instruction permit, and you are not a LICENSED CDL DRIVER.
Hope this helps -
Thanks Highway101,
That's what I got out of the WA site as well. It says "all CDL holders" which implies that it doesn't include permit holders (or maybe it just means poor wording!). I'll check with them when I go in to take my test (or I'll give them a call if I can). For the $10 it costs for the permit I think I'll still get it, even if I have to transfer it to MO once I get to Springfield that still takes the pressure off of taking the MO CDL test while I'm there.
LesHighway101 and YYZ Thank this.
