If you were to buy a truck to haul flatbed locally (150 mile radius) and were on a limited budget (less than $30k). Would you:

    a) go with a pre-EGR engine like a Detroit 12.7 (with high mileage and rebuilt engine)
    b) go with a newer 2003-2007 Detroit 14L in the 700-900 mile range

My main concern with the older trucks is that even though the engine has been rebuilt, "everything else" still has high miles.
My main concern with the 03-07 trucks is that I'll probably be looking at an overhaul in the near future since they already have 700-900 miles.

My gut tells me to go with the older trucks but my wife (I want to make sure we both agree) is of the "the newer, the better" mindset. Especially since I have a 2004 truck that's been giving me all sorts of headaches. She doesn't think it's a good idea to go to an even older truck. She thinks that we'll have even more downtime and headaches.

    Thanks for for your help.

IMHO I prefer the older trucks and I have the best heavy duty mechanic go from front to rear on anything I buy. A 2001 truck can be in better shape than a 2010, it all depends on service history. How much experience does your wife have around this type of equipment? You're not buying a Honda civic.:).

a used truck is hit or miss at best,i would stay away from co trucks, have money in bank or credit line.stay away from dealers for service find a good mech and do all work you can.last two i bought were 2000 models first had 700,000 second 1,200,000.detroit easy to work on better fuel mileage.remember a mile per gal more is about a truck pmt

They handle all the EXPORT to USA stuff for you and the US $ is at a premium to CAN $ right now so not a bad deal

Local hauls are easier on a truck so the reliability isnt as much of a concern (need for a newer vehicle). So yeah, stick with an older truck. Remember, the overdrive may not get much use as you may be on more city roads than freeways.

There is no way I'd want to buy one our trucks with 650k on them doing "local" gas hauling vs a truck that was on the open road for the same amount of miles… No way, no how.
