When the statute of limitations expires, I have a great 'bobtailing to orientation' story to tell. Short answer, yes I did log Driving to orientation. the rest is an interesting story for another day.
-
If you drive it, yes.
-
Montana DOT officers told me as long as you are not on a "dispatched" run, then there is no need to log anything.
But then again Washinton told me all use of the truck had to be logged.
If anything, be safe, and do a log. Mark it as "off duty, personal use".
EDIT TO ADD...
Im not a legal expert, so don't quote me on that. But it is what I do... hopefully Im doing it right. -
I would log it on duty driving just to be on the safe side until you get to orientation, then ask them how you should log it. (That would protect you just in case you get D.O.Td somewhere before you get to orientation). If you log it on duty they may give you a hard time and say it should be in the driving grid since you are driving a CMV. There are some out there that would mess with you on it. If you're doing what you say you are doing on your log, they wouldn't be able to gig you for it as long as you're not otherwise breaking the law or HOS.
kimbosa Thanks this. -

Last paragraph. I personally wouldn't log it but that's on you. -
Log it, You can always tear it out and do an off duty log later.. . I talked to a OK HP and he told me that MOST of the bob tails he stops have bad logs or no logs at all. Just a heads up. Better safe than sorry. Be kind of rough to go to orientation with a logging ticket now wouldn't it? Just saying better safe than sorry.

Thanks everyone i plan to log it but i was jst wondering if i could get away with logging off duty or not
-
You're not under dispatch so I don't see why you can't but if you have to pass scales just log it to be on the safe side.
-
If it is a CMV and you are driving it - Yes, you need to log that as driving time.
