I don't know about that. The new autos coming out are way advanced. They can detect stuff and do stuff you wouldn't think of.

Why do you feel that driving an automatic transmission is a lazy man's way to drive?
There is still an enormous amount of responsibility on the individual truck driver hauling 80,000 lbs of both freight and the tractor trailer itself.

City and county transit bus drivers, along with over the road bus drivers, sit on their chairs all day also. They are responsible for the lives and safety of their passengers. Considering with what they put up with all day, they are NOT lazy.

9 and 10 speeds will not work for all applications. For instance, eaton will not guarantee a transmission for heavy haul unless it is an 18 speed. 18 speed has a warranty up to 140k pounds where the 13 speed does not.

    mje and Lepton1 Thank this.

Call it all you want driver but it takes real skill to drive a manual. Driving an auto is not even driving in my estimation. Any bubblehead can get by with an auto but put him in with a 13 speeds and it's a whole new ball game.

Yes that's true, but I'm not talking about heavy haul, which comprises a small amount of trucks out there.(Except maybe Michigan) I've driven every kind of transmission, and almost never used all the gears on a 13, especially on the bigger horse motors. I'd say 75% were either 9 or 10 speeds, and they did just fine.

Eh. You could train a monkey how to shift. Shifting well is another topic. In its most basic form it's watch the needle clutch and move the stick. Or watch the needle clutch rev the needle clutch move the stick.
That being said, I wouldn't spill me beer as often if I had an auto.
