No they're exploiting them. 10 CPM....pay them what they would pay anyone else that is learning to drive.

But it's their choice, not yours and you obviously have more options from which to choose. Nobody is forcing them to hire on with CC but for some it's an OPPORTUNITY to get out of a hole and move on. Furthermore, with incentives for fuel conservation, safety, on-time delivery, etc. it works out to be more than .10 a mile. It obviously must be OK for some people because the company is still in business and even expanding.

Now this is getting interesting. I like a good fight.
I am a convicted felon. And proud of it. But my felony was failure to pay Child support and telling a judge I thought he was an idiot. The judge said that the National Guard was not Military Service. I think it is obvious that I was correct about the judge being an idiot.
I had no problem getting hired. Fed Ex turned me down but a letter to the Chairman overturned that.
Now lets take other felonies. There are many of them. Would you hire someone who MURDERED someone. If you look into murder cases, most people who murder only do it once. They have murdered the person that needed it and are very unlikely to murder anyone else. So hiring a murderer would be a safe bet in most cases.
How about a thief? Thieves steal and they always will steal. That is a fact. No thief is ever reformed. What happens is they run out of opportunities to steal. In a truck, there is a bill of lading. It is signed by the driver who takes responsibility for the load. If it gets there and something is missing, the driver is the one who takes the hit. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that a driver will steal as it is almost impossible to get away with and it is totally impossible to get away with it for long. So, hiring a thief would be a good investment also.
Child or sexual predator. Again. If a crime goes down, you know where the driver was. Hard to get away with something when you are known to be there. Truck drivers rarely interact with anyone anyway. We see children at truck stops but if one went missing the first place anyone looks is at the sex offenders list. Still, it is a big risk. I might pass on a child molester. I don't know if someone can control their drives enough to pass up a target. So no, I wouldn't hire a convicted child molester.
White collar criminal? Forger and the like. I bet they could figure out how to write a Logbook so that there would never be any violations. So, yes, I would hire a Forger.
And finally, those like me. The dreaded DEAD BEAT DADs. They should be the first ones hired. Because they need the job and usually don't care about home time.
Once a person has paid their "debt to society" they should be able to earn an honest living just like everyone else does. But in the real world it is okay to be anti-ex-con. Even if that con is black or gay or old or Muslim or from Canada or any other protected group. The fact that they are Felons allows you to think of yourself as superior.
I ask you this question. If your son was 19, had flunked out of college, had joined the National Guard, had gone off to Basic Training in a different state, was living on an Army Post, you had paid child support on time for 18 years, and you received a notice from the State of Missouri that you no longer needed to pay child support, would you have continued to pay child support. If you answered no, then you would have committed the same crime I did.
While we shouldn't judge people and we should give people a chance, the real world is more cautious. Hiring a convict makes you responsible for that employees actions. When I get more trucks, convicts will be the first of those I hire. Not because they work cheap but because I know how they think. I know they will s cr ew me over the first chance they get, so they will never get that chance. It is the guy that never got caught you have to worry about.Last edited: Jun 4, 2014

Many/Most criminals have a lot of difficulty thinking long term. Sure, they may dream about what their lives may be like "one day," but they rarely formulate a plan on how to get there (and less often stick to it).
Yes, you can make more money working 60-80 hours/week flipping burgers than you can at Carolina Cargo. But in 2 years, you will still be making at/near minimum wage so unless your goal is to get into the restaurant business, your life would be better served by investing your time elsewhere.
Likewise, if you don't want to drive for a living, don't waste 2 years "paying your dues" at Carolina Cargo because those dues will be nearly worthless outside the trucking industry.
You should have had plenty of time to think about what kind of life you'd like to live -- now is the time to start walking step by step towards that goal.Chinatown and Wooly Rhino Thank this. -
Might try going back to college and get some kind of computer training? That's where the future is.

10CPM should be against the law.I'd rather pick up cans for a living then make an embarrassing wage as that.

He said he paid child support for 18 years and even got a dismissal from paying it from the state so Id say probably proud of calling the judge an idiot? Which the way I see that, if the shoe fits wear it? Sounds like he got done the way my state tried to do me-they just didn't count on me having the records I needed to clear myself, which I did. Time the judge got through chewing on that DA's butt, they probably went back to private practice?LOL Ive always been big on keeping records, studied Law for a time and that's the one thing they made sure they taught you.Wooly Rhino and pattyj Thank this.
