That's a very strange and a freak accident.

    My condolences to the family.

A single mom with 3 kids in NYC is going to be tough. I hope there is some support offered. I know there are some trucking non-profits out there that might help. You know some lawyer will jump on this. Manholes aren't meant to go flying.

I drive the CBE a few times a week. Funny, but I never noticed any manholes in the roadway. I'm going to be looking a bit closer now. I thought I dislodged a steel plate going South on the Whitestone bridge the other day. The bump and clang made me check the mirrors to see if I'd sent anything flying.

And in the comment section one commenter said there was no manholes on the freeway, they feel it was dropped from the overpass.

    Sad situation.

Many years ago (1981?) I was crossing the GW Bridge and onto the Cross Bronx. Somewhere along there a steel plate, which they use all the time for "temporary" repairs flipped up and took out my fuel crossover. A taxi driver motioned for me to pull over. I lost about 60 gallons of fuel before I could get pulled off the Deagan(I-87) and stuff a rag into the hose. The statute of limitations has run out on the huge environmental fines I would get now for that.
There is always enough debris anywhere along there from all kinds of sources to make it a hazard. Just the stuff falling off of vehicles from the rough road is enough.
Very sorry to hear about this.

    Shaggy and gpsman Thank this.
