I'd like to make a list of questions for new drivers (and even old ones) to ask prospective employers. Questions such as:# How many miles average can I expect to drive? # What type equipment do you use? # APUs/EPUs/stationary bike with a generator? # ...Please suggest more things we should be asking!! My class met with an Averitt recruiter last week (blog to come shortly), and I went blank in the questions department. We newbies don't know what we don't know, and could use help in what to ask.Maybe we can make this into a sticky to help new drivers find these questions as well...

In my opinion, there's not much to ask:
1. APU's - Tri-Pack or similar or just battery pack for heating and cooling?
2. Benefits? Health care and pension plan.
3. Assessorial pays? Reason : Assessorial pays are much more important that "Cents per Mile." Cents per mile don't mean much if the assessorial pays aren't there.
4. You can ask about home time if frequent home time is important; otherwise don't even bring up the subject.
Example : My last company, I made .34 cpm and finally a raise to .36 cpm which was negligible in the paycheck. My annual income averaged between $60K - $65K due to excellent assessorial pays and a constant freight base.
These, to me, were the only questions that are important. Everything else is nickle/dime stuff.Shaggy, blairandgretchen and DannyD Thank this. -

Inverters allowed?
What size? Who installs?
Breakdown pay? Stop pay? Layover pay?
Home time policy? Passengers policy?
Can I look down the office girl's blouse without getting slapped ?Shaggy, harlycharly55 and Chinatown Thank this. -
What kind of questions are those? Pensions, overtime, Dude what is this Wal Street. You ask What kind of lube do they use if any, and can you use your own.

What is the driver turn-over rate...are drivers using the company to get experience , or is it a place that I can see my self working in 15 to 20 years....that to me is one of most important things...if the company is worth staying at , then almost all those other things mentioned are in-line too.....

The questions are not important because they will try and determine what you want to hear first, and then they will tell you what they think you want to hear. Let them volunteer info. Make them sell them self and don't volunteer too much about what you're looking for ... BTW what are you looking for? Some new drivers really aren't sure what type of driving operation they may prefer in the end because they haven't researched the industry all that well and don't invest too much in their wild promises.

Question number 1. In the opinion of everyone at the company, who is the only person that works there who matters, by which I mean who is the only person at the company who brings in income to the company?
If the answer is not, the driver, move on. -
