Speed enforced by aircraft what does this really mean

Hi cnsper, that was usually the give away there was a bear in the air, as there would be 2 or 3 cruisers on a ramp. Haven't seen that in the Badger for a while.

 

Not much. An airplane will fly itself and do it best when "trimmed" for "hands-off" flight.

I seen a bear on top of a hill with a radar gun. no vehicle just him hiding next to the guardrail. once i got over the hill I saw 5 cars pulled over and another 5 bears waiting for a called. that be more efficient than a aircraft

 

I see quite a few troopers/cops using radar from the overpasses over interstates. Bankrupt America's current bear in the air program.

 

It's called a bear in the air. Ohio will bring them out every now and then on 71 right there between the rest area and the OD (Old Dominion-I think it's theirs anyway) yard.

 

It is an example of a government program gone haywire. When we grew up in the 50s and 60s there was a program called "Sky King" on the television. The show was about an Arizona rancher who flew a Cessna T-50 and later the 310 series. The show inspired many of us to go on to become pilots. Police officers who saw that show wanted to fly and they needed someone to pay for the plane and fuel. They just needed a way to justify the plane. So they come up with the hair brain idea to use it for law enforcement. A plane is a terrible idea for speed traps and there was a lot of fights over getting a ticket from a different cop then the one who timed you.

The airplane as well as helicopters are toys that the police departments find uses for but they are really used just to have fun and take political types up to see the city.

 

Saw them doing that near Abbotsford BC a few years ago.

 

The bear in the air is still done just not as common as it used to be.

It is most often used when the opportunity arises to pull speeders over in mass. When the speed limits are violated in mass by along a whole highway, law enforcement will put a plane in the air and a bunch of LEOs on the ground. The cops on the ground will pull in the whole road in mass. The air bear will then provide the supporting evidence that would make the logistics of radar guns ineffective. Rural highways near and after events are common targets for this activity.

 

4 pages on this topic and I don't have to read all 4 pages to know that not everyone agrees on the meaning of "Speed enforced by aircraft"

 

I hear that shining a laser at the pilot is effective.
