    Hi,

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a Tanker or Dedicated solo company driving position? Are these positions accessible to recent CDL grads?

    Thanks,
    Ken

Tanker usually pays more. Depending on what you haul, may be increased danger.
Dedicated you may have to handle freight. You can usually get into either right out of school.

Tanker usually pay more. They are shorter and easier to maneuver. Many companies hire newbies for tanker jobs with those orange trucks being the biggest.

Dedicated runs let you plan your life. You will know when and where you are going. Normally they are shorter runs and do not pay as much do to that.

Both Tanking and Dedicated come with more physical labor normally. Unloading of each takes muscle usage.

Does the good outweigh the bad? Nobody knows.

I run a chemical tank with mostly dedicated trailers. Pre loaded. Out and back. Pay pretty good. I make @ $59,000 a year and am home 6 nights out of seven. But my company doesn't hire newbie drivers. Schneider and some others do. Just hace to call around and find out who. Good hunting.

There's no comparison between tankers and van freight. 50% of your miles are empty. Unload and go home or return for another load. Tanker companies pay better, offer more time at home, and usually have better benefits.

My week...leave Dallas at 0500 Monday and drive 180 miles south to Bryan Texas. Drop my empty and hook up to my loaded tank. Deliver in Fargo ND on Wednesday morning. Customer unloads in about 30 minutes. Afterwards I drive back to Dallas empty and go home Thursday night. 2492 miles for the week.

In the past I've delivered lubricants and that entails a little down time. You still return when empty but there was always a bit of a wait for your appointment time at Shell. The pay more than compensates for any down time. Tanker customers, and I hear flatbed customers too, are always happy to see you and value your time. Good luck and congratulations, you won't regret it.

Do you mean local tanker/dedicated or OTR ?

We do OTR dedicated account. Mostly drop & hook at the same places. Never have to help load/unload.

KS999, which CDL you going to ? We went to Wolf in Schaumburg.
