I was looking at alot of the company sponsored training schools, and it seems after just one week they throw you into a truck running live loads!

There seems to be plenty of "cheat sheets' to know which gear you "should" be in so that doesn't worry me and the actual art of clutching is easy(clutch in to neutral->Rev if downshifting->clutch in to gear)

What does fear me is I'm going to stall in the middle of a busy street or something :biggrin_25522:

    Don't worry about it.
Not having driven a manual is actually an advantage.

Give it a try. You can do it, we all had to learn.

Never driven a manual transmission? Like that guy above me said you are one step ahead of everybody else. Most people (me included) knew how to "drive" a stick shift in a car but not operate one properly before hopping into a big truck. You end up having a lot of hard to break bad habits when you think you are doing something right for years but never learn the right way. If its any consolation to you, you will be one of the last set of new drivers to learn on a stick shift, manual transmissions are slowly being phased out.

And you WILL stall it or scratch gears in an intersection, especially in training, and even after you are out on your own the first few months. Thats what training is for, it is better to miss a gear in an intersection in front of a shopping mall than to miss a gear going up a 7% grade in a snowstorm. Even some of the old timers out there scratch a gear once in a while, so don't let it hurt your ego.

Give it a month, you will have it down. No problemo.

I once taught commercial driving at a private school. You are ahead of the ball game not knowing how to shift a manual transmission. Students that came in with a big head "knowing how to shift a manual" soon found out that a truck shifts nothing like their car since they are non-synchronous; yet every time they missed gears I would try to educate and they would constantly say "my car this my car that". You will do just fine...Listen to the instructor.

I would agree 100% I had driven many standard cars, race cars, farm tractors. Thought it was similar to driving a a truck. The guys in my school who had never driven any type of manual transmission picked it up quicker than most of us who have

    No worries.
You won't stall, but you might have a disagreement between the gear you're in, your groundspeed, and your RPMs. No biggie. If you get lost, just stop, put on your four-way hazards, get a gear and get going again.
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast...

We had a guy in training class who had never driven a manual truck. he learned to up and downshift within a weeks time. Not perfect, but he can function without grinding the gears too much or stalling the truck
