I pulled off of 5 north of Stockton just before daylight. I was tired and it was either sleep or crash. It was an off ramp with a good parking area well clear of the pavement.
I saw the sign, as a matter of fact I was parked right next to it. CHP showed up pretty quick and asked what my emergency was. I told him I needed a nap or I was going to fall asleep at the wheel. He was good with it and told me not to stay there any longer than I needed to.
Maybe not every officer would be as sensible but the guy I dealt with had some common sense.MidwestResident, NavigatorWife and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
That was pretty human of him to use a little common sense in the face of the law. Its really a no win situation for both parties because if later that night someone slammed into your truck while exiting the cop would be responsible for letting you stay. The solution would of course be more parking areas to minimize the risk, but we all know the powers that be in CA dont want trucks in their state, just the fine products they bring.blairandgretchen and NavigatorWife Thank this.

I don't complain about that as long as I can pass. You gotta do what you gotta do, think it's stupid law and as long as not impedance on traffic who cares.

Wallingford, CT rest stop on I-91 at mm 14. Not only do you get trucks almost blocking the entrance and exit, if you DO manage to squeeze through into the rest area proper at night then you had better have your tight quarters chops. There are two rows of diagonals as you enter, and the rest stop was likely designed well before 40' trailers were on the road. With 53' trailers, fuggetaboutit. If you decide to just go on through to exit again (which I wouldn't fault) then you are faced with running a gauntlet of trailers that are offset to one side or the other. I've had times where multiple backs to get my trailer in position to clear on trailer sticking out into the alley is necessary and then repeat the process over and over to get through that maze.
If you do try to take an open diagonal parking spot you will be hard pressed to have any available room for swinging wide enough to clear the trailers on either side. I've worked 15-20 minutes to get into a spot for a 30 minute break, of course logging Off Duty as soon as I pull off the freeway. So basically most of my "break" is spent trying to park. Barely have time to run in for a piss before I need to start maneuvering to get back out again without taking out trees, and running over curbs.
Gosh, those 30 minute breaks are good for getting well deserved rest....

Went to sleep on the ramp since the t/s was full at the 28 on 85...promptly woken up by one of Ga's finest hwy patrol...ticket was $600+!!!

Any of the rest areas on 495 in Massachusetts, they are lined up at least 10 trucks on the shoulder of the on and off ramp and they pack the truck parking area and also the car area
-
Any time you are tired...have a mechanical breakdown...are close to being out of hours...its, dark, cold, raining or snowing...that is where you will find the most crowded ramps and rest areas.
KW10001 Thanks this. -
146 mm on I65 in Indiana. Both sides will be full of trucks every night.

A Murphy's law? Makes sense except the raining part...I dont understand shutting down in a rainstorm. Flooded highway maybe, but not a rainstorm. Lol! I have seen it though...guess some drivers only drive on sunny days!!!
