What companies offer Pet and Rider policy and regional route for a recent grad?

Got my CDL two weeks ago and got back last night from my first week out with my trainer. It didn't take long for me to realize how much I have to learn. Fr'instance, in my state, the CDL test didn't include hitting the dock between two parked trailers or shoehorning into the last spot at the truck stop in the dark.

 

Remember: there is a reason why there is a 100% turnover rate in this industry.

 

I drive for werner and they allow pets and passengers once your off the trainers truck and assigned your truck..
Pet deposit is $350 non refundable and then $5 a week. ..

However, I gotta say... I dont agree with that... I think a new driver should get a bit more experience before they tackle the added responsibility, distraction and stress of passengers and pets...

For example, when I bring my dog with me, then I need to trip plan times to walk her and let her do her duties.. I also, need to check with shippers and recievers.. some will allow you to walk your dog while your being loaded or unloaded, but many wont.. you need to know that because you may need to make a stop before you go there since it is not u heard of to get stuck at a shippers or recievers for hours and hours...

I take my dog with me sometimes, I am on a home weekends account.. brining my dog does cut into the miles I run.. I run more miles a week and therefore earn a bigger check when I leave her at home..

Same with passengers. .. I have taken passengers. . there is the added restroom breaks... also, they tend to browse at truck stops.. so it cuts into my miles and there for my paycheck...

I will also say.. they are a distraction... talking.. miss an exit... they get bored and moody... they are not as tired as I am and can interfere with my sleep... all of which effects me..

When it is just me.. I earn a bigger check and do an overal better job...

 

Oh.. one more thing on pets... pets can get ill.. they can get hurt.. and it is not easy toget them to the vet ... especially when your under a load...

...now, please think about what you're really getting into and consider company in the cab a few notches down on priority list.

 

Sometimes the less distractions the better. The cab of a truck can be awful small for pets, riders, and a driver. Its smaller than any motel room. I do take a blue heeler with me most of the time, but honestly he is better off at home. Sometimes his needs have to wait because I gotta roll, or their is no way to get him out of the truck etc.
