I know of 9 drivers that lost their jobs all of a sudden . . . and didn't get paid their last checks.

Anyone know of a way to tell when a company is about to go under?

    Fuel cards are cut off

    Paychecks late, or bounce

The best one is when the mistress of the company owner comes to the front office and pitches a fit because her 'pay' check bounced!
    Saw that once.

    They don't usually say a word , it's a surprise.
....if they are in bankruptcy it's posted on the web
    because it's public record.
Last one I was with tanked and there was zero warning.

when they tell you to turn your keys in and expect your final check in 14-21 days (which ends up being never).

When you see the owner on the six o'clock news being toted away in handcuffs and his personal vehicle on the back of a wrecker.

Not in stone unless you are tight with the gal in accounting.....but there are many obvious signs like:

    Restricted fuel quantity to purchase
Iron against the fence needing parts
    Degrading equipment
Customers ######## about aggressive / early billing / collections
    late pay checks
    Fuel card temporarily cutoff
    Iron disappearing off yard
    Shop / office employees disappearing

And the list really goes on......how's your freight? You busy or slow ?

Hedge your bet and start looking. Build a list of prospects and maybe do some paperwork and get the ball rolling elsewhere.

Well, lets look back a few years. Arrow trucking didn't give much notice when they folded. Remember Consolidated Freightways ? (CF) A very well established UNION company, that folded on Labor day weekend, quietly. No body saw that one coming. Yeah, bounced paychecks and problems with fuel cards are a big red flag.
