they are like a generator that runs a a/c, heater, charges batteries that will run on half of the amount of fuel. your truck will burn about a gallon a hour idling and apu will burn 1/2 gallon.

new they are around 5 to 7 thousand, i had one on my other truck, nice to have. i took off to sell because not putting on new truck.

OMG I just had to pick up my jaw from the floor, because I had no idea they cost that much, so is this something that a company will put in your truck, and will they charge you monthly for it?

My truck has an APU. I like it. Beats idling the main motor all the time. And i can run a microwave or other appliances as well. Company put it on. Doesnt cost me anything. And has saved them more in reduced fuel consumption and reduced wear on the main motor to pay for itself by now.

This is not something you would put in the (a company) truck yourself even if you had the cash laying around.

Basically the company you pick either has them or they don't.

Example Stevens/Prime both have APUs on (I guess) all their Trucks.

Personally I wouldn't even consider any company that doesn't have APUs.

The other cheap route is to buy a generator. Honda are great but cost about $1000-$1500. Again for me, it's not something to invest for my truck. Im home every weekend I can deal without a microwave for a few days =)

The cheapest ones you can buy at RV centers, new for a few hundred dollars.

Otherwise look at used ones on the website apucenter.com

Many companies that hire new CDL grads, have trucks with APU's.

also, are you sure you'd reccomend somebody work for Prime?

APU's are just a recuiting tool, a trick to get you in the door
