SITUATION: I'm currently in the military in New York. I have at least 3 more years of active duty. I also have a business background. I've been interested in trucking for years. Plan to buy a new truck and dry van (or reefer van) within the next 4 months. Want to put a good OTR driver on the road with good pay. However, I first want to earn my CDL and do a little bit of local driving, just so I know enough to "talk the talk". I passed all required Class A CDL test portions for tractor trailer operations a couple of days ago (studied manual on my own). Just need to bring my Physical Exam Certification back to DMV to have my permit (tomorrow, Friday, November 14).
QUESTION: Do you think I could find either:
1- An individual with CDL willing to ride with me to ensure I have basic inspection and operations techniques required to pass the skills test? (Assume 30-40 hours total, evenings and weekends, over the next 2-3 weeks) I will rent a truck/trailer from Ryder if individual doesn't have the units. I will pay the individual for their time/training.
OR
2- A local company that would be willing to train me, with no employment obligations? I'd be more than willing to become a part-time/back-up driver for the company in return for the training (evenings, weekends).
Needs to be within reasonable distance of Watertown, NY. Thoughts?
