and I would add, considering all that , I do think landstar would be a better fit for you.

My thinking was, lets say I'm prepared to move to a better paying/more plentiful freight area for enough to cover my costs plus CRST wages - like $1.30/mile. And, I want to go now. I'm the 15th truck to emppty in an area. Do I want to wait until a $1.30/mile load has been offered to 14 trucks ahead of me, and sit by the phone till it's my turn - or do I want to look at a load board, make my own decision, and go?
I had to respectfully listen to the guy - I was the one asking questions, but yes, there was a faint smell in the air like he was pulling a cheese grater instead of a step.stwik, Dave_in_AZ and icsheeple Thank this. -
I anticipate a learning curve, and having to ask a lot of stupid questions - but the less I need to rely on others the better I feel about myself.icsheeple Thanks this. -

you have access to the load board, you can pick and choose whatever load you want, you can deadhead 500 miles to the next load if you wish. the process from start to finish of a load running the board is 8 minutes. but you can( and I do ) book loads in advance, I quite often am booked for 2 weeks at the time.
the misconception about being the 15th truck in line, is you wont have to wait til all 15 trucks ahead of you have a load or turn it down, quite often none of the 15 ahead of you even want the load, that's where the coordinator helps, they are constantly calling to see if ya want loads if ya don't , you are marked refused. so in reality although you might be showing 15th you may be one only three that are still matched to the load.
it is not nearly as complicated as it sounds, to me it gives a bit of order and you aren't constantly having to answer or look at load alerts or stay on the laptop or phone looking at the load board. whereas at landstar it basically every man for himself.stwik and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
but I will say for someone buying their first truck, for someone who hasn't had a lot of experience picking and choosing their own loads, not knowing what are good flatbed lanes , etc. Mercer might be an easier transition for many.stwik, icsheeple and blairandgretchen Thank this. -

I learnt a LOT today. I'm really looking forward to the transition now.
Thanks to ALL for the input here. Keep you posted.
But first . . . sleep.
