Hi CJ, I'll say. I'm not a religious man, but if I was Kaleb, I hope he was in church today.

    The usual suspects?..........:biggrin_25523:

Funny that there's always so much anxiety about Cabbage Hill further West but this stretch of road claims far more causalities.

I did it every week for about a year, lost count of how many truck crashes I've seen through there, even when there's no ice the sneaky curves get'em.
Hi 'olhand, I hear ya'. That seems to be a new term, black ice. Years ago, we never heard of black ice. Either it was slick, or it wasn't.:biggrin_25513:
Websters first added "black ice" to the dictionary in 1961 & it has been commonly used in California since the '70s. The tv show "CHiPs" even featured an entire episode to the subject in 1983.

That said, what used to be called "black ice" is not the same as what people call black ice today. Originally it referred to patches of ice, usually on mountainous roads, that were nearly invisible (e.g. due to being in a shaded section of a roadway). The ambient temps were often above freezing, resulting in a thin film of water on top of the ice, which made the road even more slippery while lulling motorists into a false sense of security.

If you see snow on the ground, it isn't black ice. If you can see compacted ice/snow, it isn't black ice. If a layer of fog freezes onto the roadway -- that is.

None of which excuses anyone for exceeding the basic speed law.

It's always somebody else's fault, and if it can be blamed on a government agency such as a highway department, it makes it SOOOO much better!:biggrin_25513:

Not to be pickin' schidt with the chickens, but wouldn't what Joseph is saying be "UNPROSELYTIZING?":biggrin_25523:

I don't agree with his point of view, but I do agree that he has the right to put it forward.

double yellow and joseph1135 Thank this.
