If I'm not mistaken....double clutching takes the "shock" out of the drive-line. This keeps newer drivers from tearing things up....Get a heavy load behind you , or get into an off-road situation , and you'll really see why double clutching is an important skill to have.

Double clutching just allows the gear you are shifting into to match the speed of the gear you are shifting out of. If you allow the engine/gearbox input shaft speed to rise or fall to suit the next gear you are shifting into (aka "floating") then you don't need to double clutch or use the clutch at all.

Synchromesh gearboxes as found in cars and some trucks use friction cones to match the speed of the gear you are shifting into to the one you are shifting out of.

You can shock and damage both gearboxes.

Many years ago I had a mustang with worn synchros in the gearbox. If you just tried to shift normally there would be lots of grinding if it even went into the next gear at all. By double clutching each gear (2,3 & 4 mainly) I was able to continue using the car for nearly a year until I got the money together to fix it.

That is most likely a robot truck with no human drivers at all. Most of those big type mining trucks are remote and computer operated now and don't even have a human driver in them at all.

Meanwhile macho man supertruckers sit around and argue about manual's vs automatics, while the companies are looking into ways to totally eliminate the human driver in the first place. Robots will be driving trucks down the highway and some old supertrucker will still be arguing about how manuals are better than automatics lol.

Horses had to be told when to change gears too, ya know! When they go into "automatic" mode, it's usually because they've been spooked and their flight instinct has been triggered. Doubt there were many runaway horse ramps to save your skin if that happened...

...and the step up into the horseless carriage was a pretty big one. I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts very FEW truck drivers would be able to slip behind the wheel of a Model T and drive it away. Sure, it's got 3 pedals on the floor...but none of them are the throttle...and vacuum doesn't advance the spark yet, so you've got to do that yourself too.

Point is, change is inevitable, but not ALL change = progress. Drivers need to be in control of the vehicle and pay attention to what they are doing while driving. The less involved a driver is in the process, the more able (s)he is to seek out other non driving related tasks to occupy their time behind the wheel...distractions from what they are SUPPOSED to be doing. How many do you suppose would be able to text & drive through town in a manual transmission, manual steering vehicle that took both hands and both feet to drive? Couple that with all of the additional "safety" features which work to remove the pain from stupidity and there are no longer consequences for bad behavior.

There's change, alright...but it sure ain't for the better.

It's funny, most of the people who hate automatics are the same morons who start their manual off in the highest gear possible for fear of making too many shifts.

Hi scottied, that's funny, but true. Once when I worked on the farm. we were picking up hay and the boss hired a lot of young people, to give them experience (and there was no one else to do it) and the boss, who was pretty perceptive, saw this one kid, pulling a full wagon with a pickup, noticed coming out of the field, never shifted the pickup, and a little smoke came from under the truck. When he questioned the kid about that, the kid replied, " if you slip the clutch just right, you don't have to shift". The boss fired him on the spot!

precisely my point to tater totter.unfortunately i didn't sum it up in the manner that you did. off road, pulling an end dump places me there quite often, and in soft areas after having been loaded or unloading,i have to double clutch.i generally do it to myself however as i creeeeeeeeep out of the loading pit and shift into second slowwwwlly.i highly doubt tatter totter is placed in such a scenario although i suggest that he/she do so. it will be a learning experience that is hands on. ain't nuttin like trucking in the mud and slop with a top heavy trailer.

edited to add the downside- my good looking truck is never as clean as the mega fleets truck at the truck stop.i am beginning to have mental issues regarding just that because those clean truck/trailer mega boys probably look down their nose at my set up in an ignorant manner. if they only had half an idea-
