at one time I planned on going to work for a company out of Menomonie, WI called TRAC. A week beforw I was going to jump ship I ran with one of their drivers who told me how bad that place really was. The owner, John Hintz, had the nerve to post in the entryway how "God has blessed his company", all the while cutting off the employees health insurance payments, knowing the company was going under months before it happened.

Even before that, the driver warned me about constant overweight loads, drivers constantly being pushed beyond houts of service regs, leaky, old , unsafe beat up trucks and trailers.

Not complying with their idiocy ending up getting you fired or making you wish you quit.

As his company was falling apart at the seams he was already applying for credit in northern Minnesota to start up another business, which he failed at several times later.

Not true. Breakdown department the wait time isn't long at all. It's the dispatchers that you wait on hold for forever. However anybody with common sense at a big company emails the fleet manager if they need to speak immediately and Qualcomm won't cut it. Also any issue I've ever had with truck or trailer that I reported has been taken care of immediately. The fine policy is fine. (No pun intended) The driver probably knew the light was out but didn't wanna take the time to fix it more than likely. He gambled and lost. As you stated there was multiple issues with the trailer....Blame it on a POS truck driver who needs to take responsibility. Otherwise drivers who actually pretrip will be out of a job when the company's CSA score goes through the roof and nobody wants then hauling their freight.

I wouldn't fine you but you'd lose $100 in bonuses that week. Do your inspections, report and we will fix. I want to know. I don't want a driver driving crap. As an employer, how are you supposed to encourage good inspections? With bonuses.

    But we're regional not OTR.

this is why I work where I do. I tried the big company avenue. And all that BS that went with it. When I need a tire, I call Bridgestone or Michelin. If I have a breakdown, I call, get answered immediately and either head to a shop or have help coming within minutes of the call. If I need a washout or a light, or whatever, I just buy it and turn in the receipt. No PO or waiting on hold or anything stupid.

It used to be this way a lot of places. But thanks to our ethically-challenged 'brothers of the road,' most have long since gone to distrust as the default, when it comes to drivers.
