Hey Beyond... Here's how I see it.. I agree with everyone in that escrow funds suck. Now if you made it a deposit on equipment, to used and turned back in with no damage that would be good. $1,000 though? WAY too much for that. $250-$500 are good numbers.
Maybe if you would hire drivers that run legal, and do the job safely you will lower part of your scores. Find drivers that will inspect the equipment each morning.
I've worked for a few shady outfits in the past who are now in deep trouble with CSA and the DOT. They are on the way to going out of business, because they refused to change. Here's an idea for you... Maybe have an off duty motor carrier inspector come in and look over your operations? I know a few companies that did this and are improving.
Don't hold back paychecks more than a week, pay for orientation on the last day of it, then make sure you have a load ready to go for said driver. Offer the driver the best benifits that you can. Get rid of the problem drivers, and start being more tough on who you hire. Start looking for drivers that have taken care of equipment, and companies in the past.
Dispatch at 50-55 mph giving the driver time to get there in a safe manner. This will get them more rest and hopefully it'll help your CSA score in that department.
You asked us for our advice and we gave it to you. The only person that can start make changes is you and your employer.

Beyond I got to say you guys got the makings of a very profitable trucking company......as long as you're generating capital I wouldn't worry about turnover because in your market cheap drivers are a dime a dozen. Good luck with your future business plans!

You want drivers? PAY them at least above average -
There is positively, absolutely, no legitimate reason to hold 2 weeks pay on a driver. Period. End of story. In this day and age of E-Logs, billing through E-mail, and banking with very short float times on deposits, you are acting as though you are doing payroll in the 1950s. Where I work I turn in my pay sheets by Saturday, by E-mail, and that check is cut for me the following Friday (6 days later).
Saturday- All drivers turn in pay sheets by 4 PM
Sunday- Office staff compiles the pay reports. (Yes, our office staff works on Sunday)
Monday- Pay reports are sent, electronically, to the payroll company
Tuesday- Payroll confirms info with our office staff.
Wednesday- Any discrepancies between the payroll company and the office staff are corrected
Thursday- Paychecks for all drivers are printed, or direct deposits are made, if the driver uses it.
Friday- I waltz into the office, whistling a happy tune, and pick up my check.
The company I work for has good drivers, and a great office staff. The company has only been in business for about 3 years. Why is a small, new company able to get by with 1 week pay processing, yet your company holds 2 weeks? This is a sign of a bad company. There are a bunch of reasons you could be holding the pay back for so long, but they are ALL DISHONEST.
Yes, you are people ARE a bad trucking company. -

The problem that your company I bet is having is the same that many are starting to have nationwide and the reason I personally have been job hopping since losing my old job back in Oct is pay...cash...green backs...dead presidents!
For me personally I will only work dedicated and prefer team to the South or South West but again the the reason I drive is money. Heck most companies can keep the benefits....even saw one that offers drivers money if they do not take insurance which would be great to see as the norm but in the end the rates must go up or freight will sit. I am seeing many companies starting to raise pay but too darn many are not. As the CSA keeps weeding out the idiots and the bad companies the driver shortage will continue to get worse. As with many new drivers coming home from war and younger drivers not wanting to spend more than a few days on the road, companies will have to adjust or be left in the past.
Also this cents per mile is so 1970s, I am seeing more and more hourly, salary or pay by the load.Last edited: Mar 14, 2015
