Hello Expert Truckers,
I had complete overhaul for the above truck of $ 18,000 after 1,400,000 Miles. The Overhaul was complete Engine Kit, new Cylinder Head, Injectors, Clutch, Oil Coolant, Radiator, the wirings, the Mounting Engine Bushes, Drums, Brakes, Airbags, Anti Rust Coating and Battery. I only started driving this week for 2,000 Miles and I had to put today 2 Gallons of Engine Oil. I do not see any Smoke and Leaks. Is it normal to loose Oil, The Garage Supervisor told me it is Ok until 15,000 Miles. Need Urgent Advise. It is my first Overhaul and Happy Weekend Truckers.

It is possible that it could be just rings but that does seem like a lot of oil.
iland300 Thanks this. -
everybody claims of severe oil loss on a rebuilt motor.
i have no idea why though, as that problem doesn't exist when the motor is brand new. as in brand new truck. only exists, when new piston kits and cylinders get installed. apparently new parts aren't speced the same as new parts.iland300 Thanks this. -
Yeah - that was my issue with the "Till the rings seat in" story. iland300, it'll use some oil till the rings 'seat' in - then it should subside. Keep a close eye, and document when, and how much top up oil you're adding, in case on the off chance, the rings don't seat, and it needs another rebuild.iland300 Thanks this.

For How long or How many Miles I should keep adding Oil for the Rings to sit.

A gallon a thousand IMO is not bad for a new engine but if your concerned then find the oil......Stack? radiator? Ground? Fuel? Air tank? It's going somewhere. Got the right thermostat? If it's too cold it will take a long time to break in.....check the turbo, pull off one of the charge hoses. Should be nice and clean, no oil there at all.
See any smoke? Ever? Hard pull, no pull, cold start, warm idle? What about the fuel? Black or green?
Get a notebook and start documenting the times and mileage you add oil. Brand make a difference too. My old Yamaha hated everything but Delo which I despise but if that's what works......others love Rotella and finally my dog loved Mystic JT8.
On your question it's seat not sit and that means the rings need to wear a little bit to conform to the shape of the liners. Moly rings are harder so they take longer.
Get a flash light and get to looking. Shine up beside the tranny at the back of the head...look all around the pan gasket etc. Oil runs down and back.....see any residual on the frame, tranny, axles ?
Start looking around...it's going somewhere I promise.
Good luckiland300 Thanks this. -
That's normal.
Here's an interesting story.
When the first car engines were built there was no rings on the pistons. There was a gap for a ring but no ring. The carbon would build up and make the ring! Pretty cool huh?iland300 Thanks this.
