Well, you said it about opinions, that goes both ways.
Here goes another good thread down the crapper... -
Hey loose leafs, you make some valid points on the industry as a hole, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on other things. Enough of the negativity. I have always said that you could line 10 different drivers up from the same company and would get 10 different opions of the company. Sorry you, or someone you knew had a bad experience at Magnum. I can only speak for myself, I'm happy here, make good money, get home when I ask to, drive top of the line equiptment, and don't get micro managed.
gdyupgal Thanks this. -
To the op...hope your daughter gets better man. Ill be praying for her. Sucks about your check. I canr get on you pike the rest of these guys because if it was my daughter Id probably done the same thing. I applaud you for being there for her most dads wouldn't in todays day in age. Good luck and God speed.

What's the name of the guy you're talking about? I bet it's the guy I worked for 18 months ago at another company.

Just my opinion.
I don't know anything about Magnum, and would never make judgement over one driver's opinion. I also won't make judgement on a person by one situation. Maybe the poster will look back after a few years and think "Yeah I didn't handle that right." We can agree that this situation didn't work out.
North Dakota is a right to work state. An employer holds the right to release you at anytime without cause or explanation. An employee owns the right to leave at any time without notice or explanation. At will employment. Some employers forget it is a two sided coin.
I do believe Magnum owes an explanation for keeping his money. If he is a W-2 employee they by law owe him a pay reconciliation.
Personally, my kid comes before the company. Period.
The OP could have shown more professionalism. The company could have shown more compassion.Last edited: Apr 23, 2015

I agree with everything everyone has said about taking care of his child, absolutely 100%. A child comes before any job but my point was this. It should of been up to the company as to how that truck was returned. If they wanted it loaded first and he didn't have time to deal with that then Magnum should of been given the opportunity to say, take care of your child and we will send a driver to retrieve the truck instead of you deadheading back. I find it hard to believe after speaking with the folks at Magnum that they wouldn't understand the situation and tell him to take care of his child. I could be wrong.
Also I find it hard to believe that they won't actually pay him what he is owed, regardless. Im not sure about the deadhead miles since he didn't give them an opportunity to make that decision but I'm pretty confident they will pay him whatever other miles he is owed. Again, I'm an outsider looking in at this point. However I can tell you I was supposed to start there a few weeks ago but due to a health issue with my wife they have been totally gracious about the delays and have told me to take care of her. They said I will have a job waiting for me whenever I'm ready if OTR is even an option for my family at that time.
I hope they do the right thing and pay him for his miles that he is owed prior to this situation.
Again, good luck to the op, I hope your child is doing better and your local job works out.runningman0661 and loose_leafs Thank this. -
This is not directed at Magnum, but a general statement.
What I have found, is not to necessarily judge a company by how they treat you when things are good, but how they treat you when things are bad. This goes for companies big and small.
When you have family issues (such as sickness, or a death, etc,) those things always take priority, and I say to hell with what the company tries to pull. If I had a sick and injured child, that does not mean I would pull the truck over in the middle of Atalanta traffic on I-75, block traffic, and call a Taxi...but If I am 3000 miles away from home they better find another driver and a plane ticket. Or let me put the thing into the wind if you cant find a load that loads NOW.
I hear people rant and rave all the time about how great a company is, and they brush off someone else's story about how the company wronged them and kicked them when they were down...You think you know people until you are in a hard place...then you find out who your friends are.
When you CAN'T work, you become dead weight and a liability to an employer, that is the cold hard truth. Do they work with you to help you get back on your feet if you have family issues or an injury? Or do they find a way to fire you. Nobody wants to believe these stories about getting fired for getting sick and being human..until it happens to them.
I worked for a 400 truck "family" company a few years back that smeared my DAC simply because I do not appreciate being a pawn and being lied to. This was after the housing crash in 2007-2008 when a lot of companies shut the doors or got bought out. The company was paying "chump change" on rand mcnally miles to start with, and it was to the point that drivers were tattling on each other for petty things trying to get browny points.
I thought I knew the people I work for now, until I got injured. I broke my foot, but was still able to drive, and simply told them for a few weeks that I am a gimp and their are a few certain loads I do not feel comfortable doing. I am grateful that I can still drive, But I hope I am not going to have to find out the hard way who i can't count on in life, and write another review under "Report a Bad trucking Company here." I will see how the next few weeks go.
Well, one of those loads was "all they had" one week, which I knew was a blatant lie. Two drivers I know for a fact were not giving up their short gravy runs, because dispatch knows they cry and whine more than I ever will. I wound up in Wyoming in the middle of the blizzard last week, not much fun when you are supposed to walk in a cam walker in the snow and slush. And what angers me is I can't count the numbers of times i have done favors and gave up loads at the last minute because some grown man's female genitalia hurts or teeth are falling out.
It's no secret some come on here to bash a company because they didn't get their way or even if it wasn't a good fit...All I am saying is don't be so quick to judge someone's bad experience...wait till it happens to you.runningman0661, TruckDuo and Dale thompson Thank this. -
hey there Runningman, I hear what you are saying but I think on the other hand if these companies would let the drivers sign up for the areas they want to run or to have a no forced dispatch that they would have more than enough drivers. Like myself I will not run NYC. I have never been in NYC for deliveries but I have been thru NYC. With this being said in the beginning of hire, if a company don't want to hire you is one thing but to hire you and then send you there 2 years later I see a good reason to be pissed and see it as a set up. Some companies are not
always as they seem to be. This is not saying that your company is like that but I know of one that is. LOL! Be safe out there. TTYL.
runningman0661 Thanks this. -
I drive for Magnum currently. It is my first trucking job ever and I'm in my first year so take what I saw as that (a new drivers point of view)
They have been top notch so far. I COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE all the time with dispatchers telling them where I am where I'm going and when I'll be there with how many hours I have left and they have done nothing short of getting me a load straight back out. I get good miles and I drive a nice truck. Sure there are a couple people I deal with that need a hug or get laid but for the most part they're super friendly and helpful. My father drove so I heard all the horror stories growing up and they just haven't happened with this company towards me YET. All in all I'd say Magnum is a good company and you will get out of it what you put in. (Which can probably said for alot of companies)
The only issue I have is their #### pay stubs can be a pain to interpret to make sure you're getting paid. I've also gotten a scanner for myself to keep my own records shouod an issue with pay arise.
Also their insurance costs an arm an a leg but that has alot to do with ACA I'm assuming.
Home time has NEVER been an issue. They have to get creative sometimes to get you home but that's to be expected in my opinion.
Like I said this is from a new guy so take it as that.enicolasy, reefer75, runningman0661 and 1 other person Thank this.
