I don't really think you'll have a choice but to do the whole thing, if you want to do it right. At 1.5 million miles, I highly doubt that you'll find everything looks great when you pull the head.

Yes sir. My dumb butt took many years to finally quantify the virtue of "Do it once, do it right".

Yes, I'm pretty sure it is what B&G meant, Detroit. If you'd replace the head gasket, you'd recondition the head, right? Hey, at least you won't need new injectors!

What about blowby? Lot of mechanics consider that a meaningful sign. My DD60 14l has 967K, compression 96-100% all cylinders. I am going to run it for a while, until there's a more distinct sign something is wrong. Right now, just checked my oil this morning, less than 1/4" below full mark after about 9K miles, some heavy, some light.

Yea thats true Star, but ima have to pull the front down anyway it goes because injector 6 rockarm went bad and stopped the roller from rolling on my camshaft on the lobeand damaged it a bit,so it has to come out either way,i discovered that when i was replacing the injectors, you said that the compression is good, ive never bought it to a shop for compression test so what is considered good compression? Number wise

As far as blowby,my blowby isnt to bad.I was talkin with a mechankc buddy of mines and he said that oil leaks out 2 ways, either thru a crack in the valves inside the head or thru the oil rings on the piston, either way is bad then the oil burns out thru the exhaust commence the dreaded smoke.

So i decided to drop it in the shop in another Month or so,im just taking my time trying to find a reputable shop, that will give me a warranty,i dont trust just no anybody.Do you know of any good shops in the south thats STAND UP & REPUTABLE,ALSO DECENT PRICE WISE.

Ok,so i found a shop they will charge flat rate of $2650 about 30 hours to a week, the longest part is sending head off to reshave and send radiator to boil out, gotta price that, but if i get the kit they charge labor only and 90 day warranty, but if i go thru them its a 1 year warranty if they order the kit not sure how much they charge for a kit,but i got some thinking to do.

What would yall do,i have a buddy mechanic who can do the work for a lil cheaper and i would help him out because i wanna see the work and know what all im doing along the way, but he dont have the hoist to lift it,i would have to rent or buy one, plus i would have to rent the tool to press the sleeves back in the block and pull the old ones out as well, but he got everything else,so i gotta sleep on it,what would yall do?

If you and your buddy have the time, I'd be inclined to tackle it myself - learn as you go, - just make sure you do it right.

Depends on your budget and time frame too - how soon you need her rolling . .

I havent been rolling in a few weeks im down at the moment, not because of no work but i have been pricing different parts, internet shopping getting things delivered, the worst thing you can do is wait until the last moment and try and get everything shipped in all at once, for some strange reason things never go according to plan,i found a new camshaft for $500 and a turbo for $750 online,my injectors were $205 a piece, next is to send the serial number for the engine to make sure they have the right kit in stock, when i do, do it ill be sure i replace water pump, hoses, mite send the crank in to get remiced if i can find a reputable shop,or find a place to send it off,so either way ill have things in order, when you are doing a project this massive you gotta make sure you have all the necessary tools, but yeah i would love to work on it 1st hand, anybody that owns a truck and dont wanna learn how to fix things,or how things work is just crazy,KNOWLEDGE is POWER and my mechanic buddy has shown and shared with me so much about diesel engines.

So yeah u right about working on it and learning,my budget is around $8,000 yeah i know i can go buy a newer motor with less miles for that price and swap it out,but after $8000 what more am i guaranteed that something isnt gonna break sooner??? Atleast ill know 1st hand what i did, what i got and what it takes to complete a task like this, lol i dont plan on selling my truck no time soon,im in LOVE with her and she in LOVE with me,lmao and my GIRLFRIEND is JEALOUS because she gets all my MONEY,TIME and ATTENTION lmao,,,oh brother

Funny. My wife refers to the truck as "THAT other woman in the driveway",

Sounds like you're half way down the DIY road - there's loads of good wrenchers on here to help if you get stuck @Ringo1 is very knowledgable - @baha , @Cowpie1 has a lot of tech info, . . .

Thought you said you were going to sleep on it . . . ?!
