How does the Detroit Metro traffic compare to other large Cities?

    I drive a local tractor and 53 foot trailer in the Detroit market and find the traffic a "cluster challenge" at best. It appears that the art of merging is not even an option any more. What I experience here is a four wheeler will come down the merge lane and then get just off my right fender then sit there till the merge lane runs out. They appear to be incapable of acceleration or braking to fit into traffic. It seems as though they are being taught to have the freeway traffic shepherd them into the fold. If you try to move over to let people in it becomes a dangerous crap shoot for you. If you try to signal your intention traffic will immediately move up or over to block those actions. If you are fortunate enough to move over a lane to let traffic in then you are froze out there in my governed 62 mph and irritating those of you who are passing through.
    It is impossible to keep any type of safe following distance as any safety barrier you try to maintain is filled by a vehicle plowing in there and then braking hard to fit the flow.
    I could go on and I do know it is the nature of this beast. The question I have for you guys and gals over the road is How does this traffic compare as you are driving through other major cities?

    Any major city is a bottleneck,
    Every 4 wheeler is an idiot.
    What else can be said?

    I have to make 2 night deliveries in downtown Boston. China Town and "southie", with a 53 foot trailer as well, and clogged streets and when it snows, one is lucky a bicycle can get through, let alone a Fiat.

    What do I do?

    many times, I close my eyes, do the sign of the cross across my chest, and slam on the gas pedal.

    Meh, it's only a short time in jail anyways.

    Hang in there, as you too will be near retirement like me.

    its the same in every large city. i dont move over as i also get stuck out there . i just lift off the pedal a little bit to let 1 or 2 in and then get back on it

    20 years ago, Detroit was a major metro area. But now, its like a bomb went off and wiped out half the population.

    Detroit is way better than a lot of others. I ran Detroit off and on for 15 years. Now I run Toronto. I miss Detroit's freeway layout every day.

    I think New York is better about it. It's the same stuff but when they jump in front of you they don't hit the brakes, they seem to know to do that just before they merge.

    All you can do is leave some space for the ramp traffic to merge in front of you, which is better than most. They probably won't be in front of you for long. They just want the fast lane or the next exit. :p

    Depends on what time it is or what day, it seems rush "hour" can last around 8 hours on Friday. I just try go get into whatever lane I know won't end if I'm passing through and let everyone, who insists, kiss my ### (while keeping the others at the end of a few hundred foot pole, I probably stop or even brake about twice to their laughable stop and go fest). I suppose those behind me are actually more at ease, if they can handle what might otherwise be my variation on Chinese water torture (occasionally someone loses it, just to hurry up and wait up ahead, or try to stall me when I time the "go" to rolling up one second behind their having been stopped for half a minute). And how far are we behind those masses once we reach the speed limit? Maybe a minute or two, compared to 30 minutes or so of relative rest and relaxation.

    Maybe it's just moi, but all of these commuters who can't stand to wait, are simply going nowhere faster for more than long enough to outdo themselves, so you have to wonder how they manage to reach this consensus on a daily basis. I would say if it aint broke don't fix it, but uh, duh. How does it compare? About all the same to me, supposing I've been around the block (heads?) enough to generalize.

    I have often wondered as I have driven in other cities of Michigan and it seems such a joy to head away from Detroit. Their hurry up and wait in a traffic snarl, which almost always is caused by not letting traffic merge, makes little sense to me. And give these stupid idiots a sign that a lane will cut out ahead for road work and that lane now becomes an express lane.

    I really wish I could remember the comedian that once did a shtick about rush hour traffic.

    He said something like, "why do they call it RUSH HOUR, when everyone is standing still"??
